Hi everyone,

After an endometriosis bowel surgery left me with more pain and constipation I finally saw a gastroenterologist this week who gave me prucalopride.

I was warned about the severe side effects but this was so much worse than I thought! Within minutes I was sick and passing blood and mucus, then the migraine started (I am a migraine sufferer anyway) but it was so severe my face dropped and I thought i was having a stroke!

I didn’t take anymore and it took me 48 hours to feel human. Unfortunately I think it actually helped regulate me. Now I’m feeling very bunged up again and laxatives aren’t working an I am gutted!

Did anyone else have extreme side effects? Is there something similar out there that may help?

For constipation I use senna. I've tried many drugs over the years and never would have expected an over the counter medicine to work better than a prescription. But it really does. I've had 8 bowel obstruction surgeries and suffer from chronic constipation and use this everyday. 2 pills at noon. And I'm finally able to have a normal daily b.m. for the first time in my life.

Prucalopride usually has really awful side effects the first couple of days. Maybe your previous migraine condition really worsened the symptoms. I was vomiting for two days and then it all settled. And from what I've heard, others reach mostly no side effects whatsoever after the first week. Since it has changes to the hormones and serotonin receptors in your colon I imagine it's like readjusting your basic levels and that's what makes you feel so sick at first before your body gets used to it.

Thanks for the reply :) I might ask my doctor about this and whether it would be worth trying again

I take prucalopride. For the first few months it was great. Regulator BMs each day and bloating significantly reduced. But after a few months the bloating got much worse as did stomach pain. I now struggle taking prucalopride as it gives me heart palpitations and makes me feel like crying - no idea why! That said, it still helps with BM and is my fall back option when nothing else works x
