constipation after diverticular flare up

Last month I had 3 flare ups and everytime I had such severe diarrohea that I completely emptied my bowel. I now am constipated. I have been constipated my whole life, nothing helps, fibre included, and taking senna ends up with crippling pain. I have discovered Lactulose and find that this works the best for me. However last time I took lactualose I ended up with severe pain and diarrhea the next morning, and now i am so worried to take it again as I find the pain of diverticulitis to be excruciating. So I have been a month with having a bowel movement. I saw my doctor who prescribed some fibre granules to take with water each day. This hasnt worked. Should I take a chance with the lactulose again, has anyone else had this problem?
