Hi everyone, this is the first time I’ve written on a forum, I just really need some reassurance that the dr is not giving me.

I’ve had my copper coil for almost 10 years now. I’m trying to book it on for removal to start trying for a family, it is really difficult to get it booked in the current COVID situation. My periods have always been heavier and a little painful on the IUD but I’ve kind of gotten used to it! However recently my periods have become much longer, and I’m bleeding in between Periods. It’s really worrying me as it’s never happened before. Can anyone else relate to this??? Also, If anyone could be brutally honest about how painful the removal is if really appreciate it. Having it put in was a horrible experience!! 😲

Having an IUD removed is much easier than insertion, as there doesn't need to be the measuring of the uterus that there is during the insertion, which some women find uncomfortable. I would contact your local reproductive health unit for removal, as they will be experienced in removals. If the threads are visible, it takes seconds.

Have just had the copper coil removed after having these exact symptoms of bleeding between periods and long periods along with hair thinning and attacks of thrush. The doctor said it was not necessarily to do with the coil, but having it removed has had an instant effect. My last period before having the coil removed was 16 days long. The period I have had since the removal was 5 days long and much lighter than with the coil in. The thrush problem is also resolved with the coil removal. Too early to tell if my hair is growing back in! The coil removal was not at all painful and there were no cramps or bleeding afterwards!

Ahhh that’s reassuring, thank you! It’s just so strange that I’ve had it in about 9 years and these symptoms have just appeared. I want to try for a baby once it’s out so I hope it clears up. So glad it’s not going to be as painful as having it put in was!

Mine had been in nearly three years before the symptoms started!
