I have the merina coil in November 2018. My period this month is 10 days late, since having the coil I have had regular periods. I have some pregnancy symptoms that I experienced with my 1st 2 but had 3 negative tests. Can the coil stop your periods a year and a half later?

Dear Momof2,

The Mirena device works by progressively thinning the lining of the womb (endometrium). In your case, it's taken 18 months to get to a stage where you no longer have endometrium to shed.

Was one of the reasons for choosing the Mirena also to control heavy periods? If it was, then you may have started off with a thickened endometrium that has just taken longer to get to this stage compared to a woman with lighter periods (and a thinner endometrium).

Rgds,

Adhari
