Dear Sazzyh,

The Mirena IUS is an effective contraceptive method and is also used for managing heavy periods. You didn't say what you've read that is worrying you, but one of the commonest complaints is erratic bleeding and spotting, especially in the first 3-6 months of using it. The device works by thinning the lining of the womb (endometrium), but this process occurs gradually and during this time spotting is problematic.

The only way of knowing if it's suitable for you is to try it, but be prepared for a couple of months of irregular bleeding which should then settle down.

Rgds,

Adhari

It depends if you're planning to have the hormone or the copper coil. I had a friend on the hormone coil and she had heavier periods with it than without.
