I had the coil put in mid march and I experienced cramping for around a week after but all in all I was fine. The procedure went well.
I'm here to ask if it's normal to not be able to have ever felt the threads as I havent been able to return for my checkup due to coronavirus. I'm now experiencing painful cramps and light bleeding a week before I'm due on my period but this only ever happens after sex. Do I need to book an emergency appointment?
Thanks for the guidance in advance x

There are a number of reasons why you can't feel the threads, but assuming it's not because of something serious (but uncommon) like uterine perforation or expulsion, the more common reasons are either the Mirena threads being cut too short or your inexperience as a 'new user' in feeling them.
The usual advice is to use an additional method of contraception (e.g. condoms) or abstinence until the situation is clarified by an internal examination to locate the threads and device. Sounds like if you've been in this situation for nearly three months, it's probably time to seek help and ask for an urgent appointment at your local sexual health/family planning clinic.
Thankyou so much. That's reassured me not be scared and to go ahead and book an emergency appointment.
It is my fair first time having one, so hopefully being unable to feel the thread is simply my inexperience but ill be sure to check with the DR now for piece of mind.
Glad to help. Given the current uncertainty with lockdown restrictions, can you please recommend this site to your friends/colleagues if they have any sexual health/contraception issues?
We know many patients are reluctant to seek help because they feel their problem isn't serious, but are probably quite anxious and don't know who to turn to for confidential advice or just reassurance. This site is supported by BASHH and many of the contributors are members and NHS professionals.
