I got the copper IUD inserted a year ago today. For the entire year I've had really long periods (about 2-2.5 weeks long!) So for the past 12 months I've basically spent more time bleeding than not bleeding. Is this normal? I know longer/heavier periods are a common side affect, but I don't want to spend over half my life bleeding!
I chose the copper IUD as I wanted a non-hormon option, but if these symptoms are going to persist for the next 9 years I'm starting to consider a hormonal option.

Like you said, heavier more painful periods are pretty common with the copper coil. I’d go back to your GP or a sexual health service that could advise you on what’s best. It must be super annoying! I had this when I had my implant and I couldn’t bare it any longer x
Firstly, the coil does often cause more bleeding, however it should settle down a bit. If you've come off any form of contraception which you've taken for a long time, that can also take a while for your own hormones to get back to normal... as normal as it can be depending on how old you are... i.e. perimenopausal.
As you don't say how old you are or if you've had any exploratory checks over those 12 months, or if you have had 'breakthrough' bleeding, then I'd be inclined to suggest that you ask to be referred to a gynaecologist to check whether you've possibly got any polyps or fibroids.. both of which can cause heavier/abnormal bleeding. As you're not taking contraception.. they might be able to do a hormone check as there could be an imbalance.
I went through something similar and it was found I had a couple of polyps..that sorted the breakthough bleeds... As I was working fulltime, I did go on hrt , I found it was fine... but some people just don't get on with it.
Do get things checked out though, just for your own peace of mind. You might have a gp that says' it's just your age'... that's not helpful, so don't be fobbed off.
