Possible PCOS

Hi, so I had a scan the other week in which the nurse giving me the scan told me that my right ovary looked polycystic and I had 2 cysts on my left ovary. I went back to my GP yesterday for her to tell me that she’s not 100% sure that I do have PCOS but evidence points that way. I’m now going back for another blood test and have one scheduled for 3 months time too and I’m getting a Mirena coil fitted next week. What are people’s experiences with coils and PCOS? I can’t take the combined pill which is normally recommended because it negatively affects my mental health, to which my GP replied with that there’s no hard evidence that the combined pill affects mental health as much as I’d described. All in all, I’m just needing some advice because I’ve been told the bare minimum about my body and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do next.

The mirena coil releases an extremely small amount of hormone into your bloodstream. If you are worried about hormones, is there a reason they are choosing an IUS rather than an IUD ? As regards coils and PCOS, all depends on whether the PCOS affects you at all .

I get really intense cramps leaving me bed bound and my periods can get quite heavy as well as being very irregular. So my best option out of the two is the hormonal Mirena ius because the iud is known to cause heavier and more painful periods, so I’m hoping that the Mirena helps with how heavy I am and how painful it can be and help regulate me a bit better.

Absolutely. 65% of women have no periods after 9 months on the IUS. So I think its a really good choice for you. Do you have any other PCOS symptoms such as weight gain, excess hair , acne ?

I do, I get really bad acne all down my back and the back of my legs, I’m unsure on the weight gain as I put most of it on while I was on the combined pill.

I had the Mirena coil for 5 years and only had one period. I now have the depo injection instead, due to complications of having the coil.

The Mirena coil definitely helped me out, but also cutting out dairy made the biggest impact by miles! Because of all the hormones in it, people with PCOS are so much more effected by it.

I’ve cut out dairy for almost a year now, it really doesn’t agree with me, I noticed a difference quite quickly once I’d stopped having it! Thank you for your reply, I’m feeling a lot better about getting the Mirena coil now, there’s been so many horror stories that it puts you off a bit but all these replies have helped

It was a little uncomfortable at first whilst it found its place but I’ve had no issues at all with it! Good luck lovely x

I think what you need to remember is that we are all different - so there is no one contraception or treatment that suits everyone. So its worth giving it a try and hopefully it will be good for you. There are other management options as you know for acne etc that you can discuss with your gp .
