If I shorten my 'week off' the pill i.e. start the next strip one day early, will I have side effects?

Also, I have looked in to this extensively and I am aware that it does not pose a risk in regard to pregnancy. I just wondered if I'd be at high risk of irregular bleeding for the sake of one day?

No you won't have side effects. You can omit the week off completely if you wish not to have a period for that month and you will have a period the following month provided you don't miss any pills.
