Hi,

I am a 72 year old male with Cerebellar Ataxia, affecting my co-ordination and balance.

Do you think an exercise bike would be beneficial?

Hi Aidee

Yes absolutely. They are good for maintaining the strength in your leg muscles and also for general exercise. However you should make sure it is set at the correct resistance for you and you don't overdo it. Also one of my problems would be staying upright on the thing! I use a static pedal exerciser which I use sitting in an armchair. When I was seeing a physio I spoke to her about the best way to use it.

Hi

I forgot to mention that with a static pedal exerciser I can also put it on a higher surface to exercise my arms.

Thanks Harriet. I'm not so afflicted that I would have your problem. Once again, THANKS.

Hello there

I definitely agree with Harriet.

Every morning I ride for 10 minutes on my exercise bike. I discussed it with my neuro-physio, and I have developed a little routine. I normally incorporate a minute warm-up and down into the ride. I try to cycle quiet hard for 2 minutes and every so often I cycle backwards. This variety eases the boredom (I usually listen to the radio, which helps) and is good for the muscles.

Obviously, you need to be careful and take it steady to start with.

All the best

Lit

Can I just say 'thanks' 'aidee' for asking this question and for the very helpful answers. I have been thinking about buying a bike for a while now and this thread has really helped me make a decision.

Cheers!

Oh dear, I thought I could just forget about my exercise bike currently gathering dust...

It looks like I will have to get it set up and start using it again :)

I am however grateful to know there is something I can do which helps. Thank you.
