Covid vaccine & unpaid carers clarification

Good afternoon.

I’m just wondering if anyone can clarify who exactly is entitled to the vaccine unpaid.

I know it says on the government website - unpaid carers covers those who care for anyone who’s disabled or elderly & who’s life would be endangered if the carer was to become ill.

I was/am under the impression that they did NOT have to be claiming carers allowance & that it covered anyone who cared for the above, wether they claimed carers allowance or worked?

Am I wrong in thinking that those carers who still work(not in care) are entitled to the Covid vaccine?

Or are they not entitled to it because they work even tho they do provide that necessary care?

Many thanks in advance for any clarification given in this subject.

Hi Tracy

I agree with your thinking, that unpaid carers do not have to be claiming carers allowance and that it covers those who care for anyone who is disabled or elderly and whose life would be endangered if the carer was to become ill.

I think that carers who still work, as long as they meet the above definition AND irrespective of whether they are in receipt of Carer's allowance or not, are eligible for a vaccine in category 6.

The following link will hopefully be helpful to you.

Many thanks for your reply Harriet, as always it’s greatly appreciated. My husband has done the template & posted it to the today. My query stems from a post one of the drs from my area made on social media when someone asked him about unpaid carers, he replied that the certain things had to be made-ie in receipt of career allowance was the first, I did question this on the reply to him but received no answer! Hopefully we should hear something about my husband having the code put in his GP record ASAP, I shall update what happens when we find out.

Best wishes

Tracy😊

I emailed the GP Tuesday saying my husband was an unpaid carer and my husband has been offered an appointment for the vaccination today.
