This is what I was diagnosed with 15 years ago and no cause was found. Ive had lots of tests but no remedies. Nothing 'halts the progress of damage to the nerves'. The neurologist told me I would end up needing a wheelchair and should make arrangements to move into suitable accommodation. 4 years ago I was still able to walk in the countryside with one stick. Now I struggle to walk on 'accessible' paths with 2 sticks. I can't walk in darkness so don't go out after 4pm during the winter. I can't walk up steps without a rail to hang on to. Just one glass of wine makes me even more unsteady. Fortunately I have a partner to go out with but I am losing my confidence to go out on my own, particularly somewhere I haven't been to. I've had no help whatsoever from doctors. The only therapy that helps is going to yoga and tai chi 4 mornings a week. The teachers have much more understanding of what it's like to lose ones sense of proprioception and lose ones balance. Also I saw a physiotherapist who specialised in neurological problems and was heartened that I already did most of the exercises in tai chi and yoga. She also measured me up for the right size walking sticks. It would be very easy to get depressed.
