Can ataxia improve to hardly any symptoms?

GlutenLadYorkshire profile image

Last year I had slurred speech and an “ataxia gait” after a couple of months these symptoms vanished completely, I had an mri twice and there was no abnormal problems I also had a lumber puncher and that was clear so was my blood tests. I do have coeliac disease and I didn’t follow my gluten free diet I did relapse earlier in the year but no ataxia like symptoms, I do suffer from depression and anxiety I’m wondering if this might be the problem, I go and see a specialist in Sheffield soon but I don’t have any symptoms now so really I don’t want to waste his time, any advice would be greatly appreciate.

Yes it can go away. When I started getting these symptoms I just got on with it.

For me it started with ear infections.

My balance would go, and I had bad vertigo. It would come and go. But also stay away for months at a time.

It took about 10 years for my symptoms to effect my life. That’s when I had to stop using my motorbike, give up my boxing, hillwalking, allotment and running in the morning.

I have had this for around 15 years now.

Get checked out now. If you do have Ataxia make the best of life while you can.

Good luck

I don't think they just disappear unless you have a very mild form of Ataxia, you can keep on top of it but I find my BALANCE AND CO ORDINATION WIll not improve ,only get worse if I let it..

Sorry to hear that I’m in a bit of a dilemma with it I went to see a neurologist and I’ve been referred to an ataxia clinic to see if I have ataxia or not, my gait is normal although my tandem walking is near normal but not brilliant, I don’t have slurred speech like I did last year for a

couples of months, i did have a strange gait as I felt like I was walking on a mattress, I do have coeliac disease and I did have depression and anxiety I was very concerned about my health at the time so I don’t know if depression and anxiety brought on my symptoms, I am also terrible for looking at the internet on symptoms and comparing them if I have ones similar to them.
