Have any of you ever injured or had pain in your Sacroiliac joint? If so how did you manage, what did you do to help recovery etc.
On the same note do any of you suffer from joints giving way? If so how do you deal with this. My left hip keeps giving way and its extremely painful when it happens.
I had really severe pain in my left lower back and so went to see the doctor today and I have hurt my SI Joint. Its extremely painful. Wondered if it may be the way I walk and the ataxia that has caused the injury.
Thanks in advance

Hi. I've had lots of pain & problems over the years. My back pain was mainly with lower back & side. Quite a few years ago I couldn't move. My GP came out as I could not get out & was bedridden. I couldn't even go to loo as i could not sit or walk. Prescribed vallium. Muscle spasms too. Since then Ive had pain in back & side on & off. I cannot lie on my back now. I must admit pelvic tilts & other exercise (not too much & safely) has really helped. My advice would be to keep moving safely as much as you can. You don't want to irritate it anymore but being immobile doesn't do any favours.
I've got osteoporosis & arthritis in hips despite being relatively young (48). My right hip was really painful but ive been using a resistance band (theraband) & cycling (using a recumbent static) & massaging hip & top of leg. This has helped enormously. Pilates was recommended by neurophysio & this can be done in the chair. Chair yoga is possible too. Safety is paramount. If you're on line search chair exercises & you tube is good too. Healthy eating & supplements may help but seek advice.
I know it's not easy to exercise for us & you may be walking to compensate pain. Ataxia may be an issue as generally we're not as mobile or flexible & you could be holding yourself incorrectly which won't help. I'm unable to do a lot now but exercise makes me feel better. I just do what i can as & when without doing too much.
I have lots of problems but healthy eating, supplements & moderate exercise has been invaluable for me.
Best of luck. Don't give up. I realise pain is horrendous but gentle & safe exercise may help overall. Not just physically but mentally as well. Seek advice from your GP & Neurologist & if you can go to see a neurophysio (not an ordinary physio). Swimming is great too as it's non weight bearing so it's gentle. Getting dressed/undressing & walking towards poolside may be an issue tho. Be careful whatever you do. You don't want to fall or injure yourself.
Take care. I apologise for going on. Please please be safe whatever you do 👍
Thank you so much. I am seeing a neuro Physio and see her again in March so hopefully she will be able to help.
I am lucky that I have managed to stay very active and carry out an exercise programme on a regular basis and so have managed to keep my core strong. I also ride horses (para dressage) as I am a full time athlete.
Sorry to hear what you are going through and wishing you the best of luck.
I have lowèr back pain and pain in my hips my GP did say it was due to the atxia gait I do chair yoga and gentle exercise to eliminate stiffness and pain 😀
I've got 3 slipped disc'so after my second child, they thought it was sacroiliac joint dysfunction. I only found out by chance when I had an MRI scan, ordered by a neurologist as it was thought that I might have MS? I was taking strong painkillers at the time, don't anymore just take over the counter ibuprofen when I need it, so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I used a strap around my lower back / hips given to me by the physio whilst I was thought to have a joint dysfunction, that may help with your horse riding or if you are able to make the transition, try horse and trap. hot and cold compress also help, which I'm sure you know about. I found walking helped although not that easy!
Thank you so much. I used a back brace/support when I ride which helps. I have also been using the hot compress have to be careful with the cold as my circulation is so bad.
