A while back I had ear trouble and went to see an ENT consultant.
He told me to keep my ears dry, so suggested getting a piece of cotton wool and smearing it with Vaseline and pushing it into the ear, when showering etc. I have done it for years now and always have them handy in the bathroom.
Recently I had "water in my ear" after washing my hair in the shower. This stayed for several weeks. People suggested it was an infection, but no pain and reluctance to take pills. It cleared up without any help.
In a former life, before Ataxia, used to regularly immerse my ears in cold water, for water sports not deliberately. This is called "surfer's ear", basically your ear canals are constricted. The ear's entrance bones get closer. This led to regular ear maintenance.
