🤔 I’m experiencing increasing stiffness linked to ataxia..this is causing knee pain. Plus…..a diagnosis of osteoarthritis in one one knee isn’t helping. This is actually worse after I’ve been sitting, or at rest.
🙂 For peace of mind speak to your GP…specific exercise, or therapy, may be advised.
Yes unfortunately years of walking on a wide base and with uneven force and emphasis has caused my right knee to be twisted inwards whilst my ankle is facing outwards. Knee is mostly painful at night . Am being referred to podiatrist to see if inserts in shoe can help. Neurophysio can also help with specific exercises.
Yep as mentioned above but after an xray showed nothing I was referred for an MRI and that showed I had osteoarthritis in my knees. Get the knee checked out, in case it is something very serious - they will send you for an xray but ask for an MRI if the xray doesn't show anything
How long have you had ataxia? I was diagnosed with sca 48 in 2006 I don't suffer with sore knees per se. But we tend to use the hip muscles more, to do with the ataxic gait. I do daily hip flexor exercises to strengthen them. It's no longer an issue, the only time I get anything like knee pain is after getting home from Sainsbury's doing the weekly shop. With a trolley for support of course, it's not so much pain as weakness.
Medical advice was to keep the leg muscles strong. I do daily 'core' exercises recommended by the Physiotherapist and have a static exercise bike that I do a session on every other day. A 'cheap' Decathlon one. Although walking more than a few meters is no longer an option, it worked for me, and now I mostly use it to exercise the heart as I am forced to live a sedentary life. I am not a natural and have had to make the exercising a 'habit' in order to do them reqularly.
