There are a multitude of factors to consider, with budget being an important element. Does it need to be dismantled to fit in the boot of a car, is weight a particular factor and so on?

I urge anyone considering an electric wheelchair or powerchair to consider questions like the above carefully.

Having said that, I recently got myself a Roma Reno II Captain Power Chair and love it.

It disassembles into three parts and so can fit into most average to large car boots. It is by no means light, but the heaviest part can be lifted by one strong person or two more average people (like me...).

It is solidly built and feels very steady. This particular model has been Crash Tested and so hospital transport will carry this wheelchair. This is important as chairs not certified will not be taken by hospital transport which can lead to stress and frustration.

My powerchair also has a dry battery which means the airlines will allow it on board. I have flown with this chair on four different airlines with no problems.

I have recently started taking my powerchair on London buses and it works really well. I have found most drivers friendly as well as the other bus passengers. This has given me back a freedom I thought was gone for ever and am able to get out and about.

Getting my powerchair was one of the better decisions I have made in my life.

how much does it cost? I have a Invacare Fox supplied by Queen Marys Roehampton but I find it very heavy and awkward nobody told me I have to charge it every day I thought I just had to charge it when I had used it so they have ordered a new battery for me but I am in hpl later on this year and as I live alone I don't want to leave the chair on permanent charge while I am out of the house. so I tend to use a lightweight whellchair and someone pushes me. all the best Sylvia
