Raising money legally in the UK

Hi all, I was talking about my friend to the people at work and they all offered to help. We'll have a coffee morning fundraising, but I don't know if we need to register as a charity. On HMRC it's not clear, it says that if you raise under £10000, you don't need to register as a charity. Does anyone know this?

Thanks

Hi Charley

The coffee morning sounds fantastic! Are you raising money for Ataxia UK? If so, there is no need to register as a charity as Ataxia UK is already registered. Contact the fundraising team at Ataxia UK on 0207 582 1444 for any advice. They will be happy to help in any way they can.

Best wishes

Harriet

Hi Harriet, we're raising just a private fund for my friend for the moment to get her some gadgets to help her cope like a freestanding bike, a cover for her keyboard so she can type, etc. It does obviously depend on how much we can raise. I've set the project up on Croudfunder.co.uk

I just want to know if legally we need to register before we go live on Facebook, etc

Thanks for your reply!

All the best
