Good morning sam - it seems we are the early birds today! Glad to hear that your Dad has been maintaining weight.
To be honest if you 'google' something like 'high calorie foods for copd' or 'copd and nutrition' you will find there is a huge amount of guidance out there. A couple of things to bear in mind - make sure Dad drinks his Fortisip after meals - not before, otherwise it will take the edge off his appetite or fill him too quickly- in fact he may not need it on days when he eats well. The same goes for liquids generally - while important to get enough liquids, avoid drinks too close to meal times so as not to diminish his appetite. I am sure you will get plenty of helpful advice later, but do google COPD and nutrition and also do talk to your GP or community nurse for advice too. Best wishes to you and your family, Parvati
Came into this with a bit of hope thinking it was a how to diet let down but trying to keep same weight
Yes we have been cooking him alot of chicken and potatoes etc but like you say stitch they just tell you to eat biscuits ,cakes etc which he doesnt like .Ill have to google high caloried foods
I have to say when my dad had very severe emphysema his weight dropped drastically - and he was a very svelt man to begin with. Anyway, he had been admitted to hospital because of a severe exacerbation and while in there he saw a dietician, who gave him a diet sheet to take home.
The recommended diet did indeed consist of things like sugary snacks, full cream, fried foods, gold top milk, full fat cheese and butter, bread, potatoes, cakes, biscuits etc. He was also taking food supplements to try and bulk out his diet. All with limited success I have to say.
Good luck
Sam
My partner has gone from 11st to 7.5st and the docs told him to stop eating bananas has he had high potassium. We found this funny as we told the doc he don't eat fruit and we were told again not to bananas or mango's. we then came home and looked up high potassium foods in COPD and the info was very good so we try to avoid these foods as much as poss hope this helps
Sam,
This is a dietary leaflet for COPD patients who need to gain weight. It was linked from an NHS website.

The NHS website page about lung improvement I got it from is here:

Hopefully you will get some ideas from this.
I completely agree with you Stitch that everyone needs to eat the proteins, carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables etc. in order to get all the essentials our bodies need. In some cases though perhaps a little more help is needed to give a calorie boost - not instead of, but as well as the good stuff.
I know that in my dad's case he simply wouldn't have been able to eat the quantities that he would have needed to even maintain his weight (about six stones, possbly less, at the time) never mind actully gaining any weight without eating some of the fatty or sugar filled foods suggested by the dietician. To be honest we were just glad to see him eat anything at all.
In saying all of this, my dad was at the very severe/end stage of his illness, so perhaps someone with less severe illness may be different.
Unfortunately I have the opposite problem and need to lose moe weight...but that's another story!
Thanks Stitch and Anne
A few years ago I had to diet to lose weight now it's the opposite way! I never used to eat eat desserts/puddings I do now just to maintian my weight Graham loves this he's got a sweet tooth ha ha but he's piling the weight on! Val
Yes it is funny isn't it, I find when I take steroids I eat more but it's usually only for a few days, can't sleep when I take them so try and avoid them as much as I can. One GP I saw gave me a short supply of sleeping tablets they did the trick but the consultants said try not to take them? Val x
