Hello Rick are Prednisolone good for putting on weight and getting your appetite back ? I am told by my doctor it is not good to stay on them for too long . Thanks Jimmy

Keeping fingers crossed for you Rick.

Its the prednisolone you are tapering down I think rick, that's the steroid.

the antibiotics are not usually tapered down. Check with your doc to be sure.

It should also say on the prescription.

Take care

Best wishes BC

HI rick1, hope you got them pills sorted and the antibiotics are kicking in to make you feel better. Trust the weight loss is more to do with poor appetite not something far worse. Get well soon will be thinking of you

Thanks' Katie have sorted the pills out, have recently had chest x-ray and the g.p. said it wasn't cancer and you can loose weight with emphysema though.

katieoxo60 in reply torick1

they do say weight loss can occur with the illness, others have mentioned this too. wish mine would drop my weight as my weight has just gone up and up since my chest diagnosis and starting inhalers, hope you feel well today

Thanks' Katie, a lot is how we are made determining our weight I have never had much weight but I am 5/10 and now only eight and half stone.

Glad your doctor is looking after you and getting you referred. Hope that the steroids increase your appetite and you regain some weight. Take care TAD x x

I lost nearly two stone before I was hospitalised with dangerously low oxygen level in blood and that was apparently because you use so much energy just trying to breath that the weight just falls off - hope that is not your problem but would guess they (and maybe you) are already keeping an eye on your oxygen levels so probably not that - hope they get it sorted soon xx

Thanks' undine, my oxygen level was 92 when I so g.p. on Monday

Good luck Rick. Prednisolone is a steroid which they may be using to build you up a bit. Good luck with symptoms and diagnosis. :-) :-) Alison

Hi Rick, was going to say congrats on the weight loss! But then woke up,& realised,it's not what was wanted!

Hope the pred.does the trick,it's pretty powerful, especially when not used much.It also used to make me gain weight,as it does make you more hungry,& being a steroid.......

Hope all goes well for you,

I wish you well Rick xx

In a similar position now Rick with regard to the weight loss and feeling rather annoyed into the bargain. Am a bit of a lightweight to begin with and it took me yonks to reach 10st 2lb...hefty for me ! Since earlier this year - the spinal fractures followed up with a bad chest infection - the weight is slowly falling off and I could CRY ! :( Always have three meals a day, although a slightly less amount now.

The district nurse has referred me to the dietician and I wondered if your GP or similar could do the same for you? Wishing you all the best and hope you can get back some of your weight soon. Lovelight x

Thank you lovelight I was nine and half stone before now I am eight and half and five feet ten inches tall so it is not good, hope you continue to improve Richard.

My pulmonary nurse asked me if I liked cream, rice pudding and the like. since I do, she told me it's easy to get down you when not hungry. Also distribute what you eat during the day, not just 3 meals, but several little snacks which are easier to absorb.

I have the same problem of losing weight. Also drinking a lot is important to make the mucus more fluid and to disperse an infection through the kidneys better. good luck with your weight, lovelight and Rick <3

In the meantime, you could drink lots of hot chocolate made with whole milk; that should go down nicely and give you a bit of weight!

Thank you, I might start having hot chocolate with whole milk, I do eat Bourneville chocolate at night while watching t.v.
