I am on tablets to help me to get through the winter and so far so good. My main problem at the moment is I am loosing so much weight because apparently because I am using all my energy breathing. I have been tube fed but it isn't pleasant & still lost weight. Does any one else have this problem?

Hi stanns

It’s good to hear from you again.

I replied to your previous post as my husband has the same problem as you and I’m constantly trying to find ways to get him to eat.

He’s been told to try to gain some weight and get a little fitter as there’s a possibility he could have endobronchial valves inserted into his lungs but he must have a BMI above 18.5 and at the moment he’s just about that.

It’s very difficult as he has little appetite and often can’t eat because he’s so breathless. He also refuses to drink the supplement drinks given on prescription.

Fortunately I love cooking and know quite a lot about nutrition so am able to keep him going but it’s not easy.

Yesterday I went online and googled the best foods for weight gain and found some interesting info. I found “The 18 Best Healthy Foods To Gain Weight Fast” by Rudy Mawer which was excellent.

It was also reassuring as I was already doing most of what was suggested.

The consultant also suggested sipping a supplement drink throughout the day in between meals to take in extra nourishment. My husband won’t do this but maybe you can.

It can be very difficult when your partner is struggling to eat and food can become a bit of a bone of contention. This is certainly the case with us as I’m often over preoccupied with food. My husband did see a dietician 2 or 3 times at the end of last year and I think it helped him to get back on track.

Is this a possibility for you ?

Take good care and let us know how you get on.

Best wishes to you and your husband.

Corin

Thank you so much for your reply, I haven't got back to you sooner because my pc has ben playing up, but I have fixed it now. My husband gets very worried about my weight loss, but I seem to be picking up slowly. I do have energy drinks. I haven't tried skis soup as I have never heard of it, I will google it. Hope all goes well for you.

Hi stanns (and Corin1950 ) it’s good to see you again. I don’t have that problem of weight loss and I don’t want to talk for Skis, but have you tried the soups Skis has been having? They sound much better than those milky things. Wishing you all the best and I hope you can find something to help you put on some weight.

Hi. Ask to see the dietitian or other person who prescribed your tube feed as it needs to be adjusted if you are still losing weight while being tube fed. All the best.

I have had it taken out now & am slowly putting on a tiny bit of weight, thank you

Yes. I have lost weight and a lot of muscle. I used to be pretty muscular but my arms and legs look like tube sticks now.
