Hello early dec admitted to hosp with chest infection and sent home with amoxiclav. Didn't feel well for a few weeks after finishing ab weak coughing and still bring green sputum up.They had me monitored by virtual ward which is nurses come and leave bp and oxygen monitor (which I have anyway as nearly 80) with very low bp. These were relayed to online nurses would keep an eye on results.I had this for a week. Was still coughing and green sputum but not as bad.Still feeling very ill and weak.Last week had a sputum test which showed Haemophilus influenzae.Started me on Mon with doxy, on Tues lympth nodes came up which I read doxy can cause but to contact doc.Rang this afternoon and app with advanced nurse tomorrow as the node at back of head (think it's called occipal node very tender and painful. So many side affects with doxy, Do you think I have had this all along? Saw my week on great grandson and worried I could pass this on but read on this helpful forum that unlikeky which reasuured me. Shall I ask for a different ab as also got slight pressure in eye (no headache) as one of the reactions is intercranial pressure. Thank you for reading this as never had probles with chest before but do have low immunity.

I suffered from the same bug 8 years ago and it proved very stubborn to a range of oral antibiotics. Eventually I was given coamoxiclav IV for 2 weeks. That worked and the bug has never reappeared

I had haemophilus influenza too a couple of years ago. It took several courses of antibiotics to clear it. Doxycycline, which always worked well for me with no side effects, didn't shift it, but I think it’s because I had had so many chest infections that year that I was building up immunity to it. A 10 day course of Levofloxacin finally got rid of it for me. If the side effects are too onerous or too worrying, I would speak to your doctor or consultant and tell them what’s happening. They may change you to an antibiotic that fights HI but suits you better. I would ensure you get at least a 10 day course as it’s a stubborn bug to get rid off in my experience. I really hope you are able to get it sorted soon and start your feel better.

Hi Daisydarling, my consultant has requested doxycycline to be prescribed should I have an infection. She requested the dose be doubled, one twice a day. I started taking it 7 days ago because I felt unwell on the advice of my gp. Well I’ve been back to see my gp because I had such pains over my eyes and in the back of my head and my legs were so painful but was told nothing wrong. Then I had to call 111 because I was shivering and felt so ill with a heart rate of 148. I was told to go to A&E where all my tests were normal and was told I likely had a virus. Back home same day still feeling ill 4 days later. Spoke to a gp and said I’m stopping this doxycycline. 36 hours later and I feel so different. I hope I don’t have to take it again!

Doxy is good at wiping out bugs, but it can wipe out us in the process. I've wondered about trying half doses if I ever have to take it again.

Hi Fircone on reading the side affects of doxy (and there is a lot!) one of them includes intercranial pressure in brain so you did the right thing ringing 111.I have had slight pain in one eye and my lymph nodes have gone down.Spoke to doc this morning and asked for another sputum test when finished ab Hope you soon feel bit better x

I’m sorry to hear you have this very difficult HI which I know how awful it is to get rid of!! I was on doxycycline for three months with no effect! After reading on this very helpful site, I discussed with my doctor changing to Azithromycin! It was a game changer for me it took two months taking one tablet three times a week to shift and I have been in these for 8 months and no reoccurrence thank goodness! Talk to your doctor and I hope this helps you to finally get rid of this horrible bacterial infection! Can I ask did you catch Covid before getting HI? Search on the site for HI and I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you sorry you have has a hard time.Think I had this early Dec they gave me amommiclav but no sputum test.Just finished doxy today after only seven days (long enough?) not feeling so weak though but coughing and sputum still green should I ask doc for another sputum test? Really worried about passing it on to my family.Have a two week old great grandson and didn't know I had this so realyy worried as he is too young for hib vaccs.Staying away from my family is really getting me down,do you know how contagious this is x

I lived with this for nearly a year but no one ever caught it so I don’t think it is contagious but check with your doctor.

I’m still taking Azithromycin Three times a week to keep it away seeing my lung specialist in feb so hopefully he will keep me on this medication!

I’ve also just started pulmonary classes last week so hopefully I’ll get my lung function back!! lol x

I shall ask my consultant if I can either change to a different antibiotic or stay on a single daily dose because I can’t go through this again.

For what it's worth I was found to have haemophilus when I was first diagnosed. It was a struggle to get rid of its effects. They say you are never really free of it, that it remains lurking in your lungs, but I wonder. It hasn't reared its ugly head for 4 years now, even when given good opportunities to do so. I am on Azithromycin-perhaps it's that which sees it off.

PS both amoxiclav and doxy have left me feeling awful. I found my AeroBika invaluable in bringing up sputum- with no nasty side effects either.
