I have bronchiectasis and I’m currently dealing with a fungal infection mixed with a bacterial one. My doctor recently switched my inhaler from Seretide to Fostair. Additionally, I’ve been prescribed Itraconazole for the next four months.
Previously, I was on azithromycin prophylaxis, but it hasn’t been effective for me. My doctor has now advised switching to doxycycline prophylaxis.
Has anyone here taken doxycycline as a prophylactic treatment? If so, could you please share your experiences regarding its effectiveness and any side effects you encountered?
Thank you so much for your help!

I only took doxy for a week for an infected finger joint that was resistant to other antibiotics, and it stopped it in a few days. No side effects at all, following the instructions.
Hope others will soon come along to say how they get on with doxy for prophylactic use.
I was switched from Azithromycin to Doxycycline when I was prescribed a new Rheumatoid Arthritis med, which wasn’t compatible with Azithromycin. Unfortunately I had 3 chest infections in 4 months, the last one turning to pneumonia and 7 weeks in hospital. I’m now back on Azithromycin and infection free!
I have Doxycycline in my rescue pack, been successful, but not straight away took about eight or nine days after a five day course to feel any benefits never felt five day course was enough, sooner or later it will lose its potency and I will be prescribed something else,
I was prescribed it for several years and took it from November to April. The first year I took it, we had an exceptionally sunny day which I was out in for hours. I had used sun protection and wore a hat but forgot the backs of my hands. They got burned an blistered. Be aware that this is a known side effect.
Otherwise, I had no problems taking them but since changing to three weekly azithromycin I have had very few infections - just COVID three times!
It's worth trying the doxy as it may suit you better. Just watch out for the sun.
I have bronchiectasis and was put on Doxy for approximately 4 months back in 2020 but it didn't kill off my infection and I am now colonized with heamophilus. Each time I put a sputum sample in they still suggest Doxycycline. For me it doesn't get rid of heamophilus but I believe it knocks it back a bit. I've found I need to eat before I take it or it makes me feel a bit nauseous.
