Hi everyone The ENT consultant has put me on gaviscon advance incase of silent reflux and sterimar saline nasal spray for the sinuses This is because of my voice problems as they might be irritating the vocal cords. The problem I have is that I seem to have more loose phlegm that I’m coughing up and I seem to be itchy all over. The cough has been violent and a bit choky. It may be it co incides with an exercabation Anyone else had this happen when taking these ? Xx

I can’t help with your question Anita but just want to wish you well. It sounds like some sort of reaction or an exacerbation perhaps. Feel better soon.
Love, Carole xxx 💕
Best check with your pharmacist , we are all different , react differently to medications .
Then contact your health professional
Best wishes to you.
The pharmacist said in rare cases gaviscon advance can cause skin irritation and rashes. So I’ve stopped it for a while and will see what happens when I take it again xx. Thanks all xx
Gosh! Who would have thought that.
Hi I was put on lansoprazole for reflux due to a hernia. It's not good to have acid flow over into your lungs, acid is there to break down food in your stomach and it's strong stuff. Both my son and partner have itching, one due to water (using showers mainly..it's something to do with the heat of the water ) he says it's like being thrown into a bed of nettles and my partner sometimes wants to cut the skin off his arms, due to the itch...that's due to Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver....it's a form of Pruritis. So there will be an answer to your itch, it's just finding it. Do you take any other meds?
The sterile saline is just a salt wash to clean out your sinuses. I find it's very useful for unblocking my nose and helping to prevent colds taking hold.
Gaviscon is an antacid and great for settling stomachs, so may have been prescribed to reduce acid fumes from your stomach which could also upset your vocal chords.
I've not heard of or experienced either causing the symptoms you describe, but that doesn't mean they can't happen. As already suggested above, have a chat with the pharmacist who fills your prescription. And if that's hard to do, take a look at the information leaflets that came with the two medications.
Hi, I can relate to your symptoms. I have Sjorgen's disease and pulmonary fibrosis. I have terrible acid reflux and itchy skin and scalp. This itching has gotten worse over the last few weeks, and drives me mad. I've been taking Peptac for over a year, and recently Famotidine. It's really difficult to know the source of problems. It also seems that medication to help one thing, exacerbates another.Hope you feel better soon.
Hi watergazer, I take both but with no side effects. I hope it is just co-incidental. As I have aged I find my skin is drying out causing itchy skin, so I moisturise more often, this may help you . Take care, Maximonkey
I take Gavison when needed - The reason I take Omeprazole for reflux (Gerd) - Omeprazole works different to Gaviscon which is an antacid. it stops acid being produced. Gaviscon is for breakthrough only. Omeprazole I think a GP has to prescribe. Ni ill effects or itching.
Sounds to me like qn exercabation or an infection with your voice and mucus, Really think you need advice from achemist or doctor as the itches could be a alergic reaction to something you have taken, To be honest I don't know, just what I think possible, Take Care x
Thanks Ern. I’ve stopped taking the gaviscon for now. My voice is my Achilles heel. Had problems with it since I was 21. It usually rights itself but not this time. I’ve started the exercises again for my vocal cords that were given to me a few years ago. Fingers crossed I’ll be back to my normal voice soon. Think I’m also on a flare up so on the doxycycline. Xx
You can buy Omeprazole over the counter in the chemist's, but it is very expensive in comparison with the cost of a monthly prescription. Check with the pharmacist that it would be suitable if you want to try some without having a prescription in the past.
