Pseudomonas colonised.

Morning all, l have been on nebulised Colomycin since last August. Although it has kept infections at bay, l am more breathless than l used to be and energy levels are very low. I have told that l will be on this medication for a long time as my lungs are very badly damaged. I cannot walk any length of time and l am out of breath. I have decided to invest in a wheelchair so my family and friends can at least take me out when the weather gets better.I am only 70 but feel like a really old woman since having this Pseudomonas infection.

Is there anyone else feeling like l do and how do you cope from day to day. I am a widow so live on my own which makes the situation doubly hard.

I feel just the same as you. I’m 68 and feel as if an 88 year old. I have bronchiectstasis, and get breathless easily, even putting my shoes on! I collapsed from exhausts year, and as a result of that I walk using crutches. I decided to buy a wheelchair. I’m living with my daughter at the moment, was housebound before the wheelchair. Even hospital appointments were a challenge on crutches because car park is so far from the main building!

Since getting the wheelchair I’ve had more freedom, even though I can’t go out on my own.

I’m staying with my daughter until changes to my house are completed. I know it will be hard on my own (my husband has dementia and is in a care home), mainly the loneliness I think

Hi, I have pseudomonas, because I was born with PCD. I’m widow 88 years old, live alone, nebulise twice daily. Due to have IV treatment at home in about month, hope this clears pseudo and I feel better and can then go out. Good luck and best wishes, Jean x

I'm afraid that your breathlessness may be due to your lungs reacting to the colomycin and going into spasm. I have come to the point that this happens with all of the nebulised antibiotics and so an exacerbation now means I will need IV. I think that you need to speak to your bronch specialist about it. Once the nebulised antibiotics are stopped, it shouldn't take long for you to get your breath back. I nebulised 0.9,% saline which calms the lungs down after I became reactive to nebbed antibiotics.

Now I nebulise salbutamol and ipatropium followed by saline and then very rigorous emptying of the lungs to keep the pseudo down.

You shouldn't be so breathless with bronch that you need a wheelchair. I am 73. Do talk to your bronch specialist about it. Not your GP. They know very little about bronch and the effects of nebbed antibiotics.

Hi Falcon68, I've had bronchiectasis since childhood and now colonised with pseudo , I've been on nebulised colomycin for 6 months, had a trial at Spirometry first , and was able to tolerate it. I am also very breathless, but I also have asthma, I have been put on Trimbow inhaler.

Hearing what you have said Littlepom, did you tolerate the Colomycin at the beginning ? Like someone said , I struggle to put on shoes / socks because of the breathlessness, I am 61 year's old .

I've been putting the breathlessness down to my asthma , now I'm curious.

I've been thinking of one of those motor scooters , think this would give you lots of independence.

Good luck
