Hi all,
Be extremely alert if you ever have to have an iron infusion as misplacement of the cannula can have severe consequences.
In my case the needle didn’t fully enter the vein so the fluid dispersed around the tissue resulting in permanent staining which has made me look like an orangutan.
Only way to address this is dozens of laser therapy which will only reduce the shade or a tattoo.
Any suggestions for tattoo theme would be extremely grateful!

OMG Mrb! That looks terrible. What were they thinking. It already looks like a hand with a finger pointing up to me but what sort of tattoo? Not a clue.

That looks awful. Didn’t anyone check up on you while had the infusion? No idea for a tattoo.
I had to bell them when the infusion had finished about an hour later.
Were you wearing long sleeves at the time?

I've had that....2 years later its finally gone. I noticed within 5 mins as pain was terrible, but still had horrid mark

That seems like a very careless mistake that you now have to live with. No idea for a tattoo. Would love to know how you are doing generally after your transplant. Really hoping your breathing is improving after all you have been through xx

Re transplant not great to be honest.
Stroke has possibly damaged both eyes and legs so on a stick now.
They also have to re operate as the sternum hasn’t healed and is extremely painful and rattling away.

Your sternum not healing is even worse than the staining - (I’m assuming the stain doesn’t hurt or irritate) at least you can cover it up. You must be in a huge amount of pain. I hope that gets sorted for you as soon as possible. I have to say, you are a trouper, you never moan!
I had a cannula put in my arm in March 2020 in A&E a couple of weeks before lockdown and that went wrong. I was admitted and the cannula was in for a week. I was left with intense neuropathic pain in my left hand and forearm, which did go away eventually, took a year or more.
Anyway, thinking of you and hoping things start taking a turn for the better xx
All these other issues they throw at me I liken to compost as eventually beautiful flowers will grow and bloom.

Obviously you need to make an official complaint. The infusion will be of no benefit to you at all lodged in the soft tissue. It has to go directly into your blood stream. Don't be scared to go to the top. Those who made this mistake will try to make light of it and distract you to save their own skins
I agree, the PALS system lets you give ‘feedback’ in 2 ways either informally or formal complaint. A consultant advised me recently to go to PALS so they can give a body of evidence to govt for proper funding. There are too many mistakes going on! It’s what the nhs strikers are telling us, NHS is becoming unsafe.
PALS were a great help to me after I nearly died because a cardiologist gave me a pneumothorax during a pacemaker procedure and did not act on it for 3 hrs. They can help get an enquiry going. Unfortunately after the enquiry is published they tend to disappear. I now have a specialist local lawer who has decided to do it no win no fee for me.
Oh that’s terrible what happened to you, I’m so sorry. It’s awful getting injured by NHS, makes you loose all trust. Yes PALS can be good but eventually I think response is mainly to protect the Trust. If we have the energy we must go on to Health Ombudsman, Care Commission etc. if we don’t stand up it’s only going to get scarier? But takes a toll tho. I’m afraid I’m loosing my old sense of all NHS are skilled,loving, caring…but then we know they’re so up against it ☹️

If it were an independent private doctor I wouldn’t hesitate but as it’s NHS and the hospital has to see me 4 times a year for life and i don’t want any grief.
This is how they get away with it.
I concur with your ‘no grief’ I had a triple bypass that haemorrhaged and left me with almost a ltr of blood between my rib cage and plueratc plates it was a week before sent me to a lung honpital for remedial surgery after several botched attempts to drain the clots. I was told to sue them but just complained bitterly. Had it been private care I would have screwed ‘em.

I'm sorry you're not feeling too great. I hope things will gradually start to get better. I asked my daughter, who has more tattoos than bare skin, for ideas. She instantly suggested an animal, a bear perhaps. As an afterthought a Gambian pouched rat- actually not a rat, but they're the good guys which can detect landmines and some human illnesses.

OMG that is awful. Didn’t it hurt. Whenever I’ve had misplaced cannulas the have been extremely painful. Looks like you need a crocodile tattoo to cover that great area. Sorry to hear you’re not doing so well after you op. I hope your op improves the healing and 🤞for your eyesight.
That's really careless of them. I would complain via PALS. Don't assume your care will be affected if you complain. In fact your care should improve as a result because they will know you won't tolerate mistakes because you have no fear.

Yes what you say is true iron treatment s can stain you're skin my daughter when she was a baby I had ta give her iron but was liquid I accidentally dropped just a spot it went between her fingers it was pure accident on my part it stained she still has it today luckily only a spot I'm sorry that's happened to you they should have taken much more care when they 9did that

This happened to my wife years ago Not with iron but with saline - No staining just her arm swelled , Saline is colorless lucky for her it seems.
I had iron infusion a few weeks ago also. They mentioned it can stain your skin. I would at least expect them to pay for the later treatments. You could look into a claim and explain what u want it for. I would be fuming 😤. Hopefully you'll get sorted out. X

that’s awful, could they not have stopped it before it got this bad or did it happen almost immediately? Is this really permanent as I have seen other times when they did get an iv in improperly but it slowly goes away, but have not seen it with iron so don’t know,
I doubt anyone would ink over it , as the ink will react with the stain
I have been thinking about you and wondering how you were. So sorry you’re having problems. I guess all you can do is keep positive and enjoy your family. How are they doing?
