NHS medication requested from GP surgery

I expect we all have repeat scripts showing when we can request regular medication, and when it was last issued, the date we can request more, and date when review is due. Most of my items were due for review on Thursday 2 March 2023. However nothing has happened, except with my antibiotic Azithromycin and my inhaler Salbutamol and Saline. I haven’t had review, and can’t order items for my balance issues, thyroid, Ultibro Breezhaler, Ventilin. I’ve messaged my surgery several times, and tried to telephone, useless. My surgery was put into group practice few years ago, my consultant cannot write to my GP, but to a doctor I’ve never spoken to at the group practice address, although they are sent electronically. I’m considering what to do before the Easter holiday, if anything. My pharmacy are very good, and will deliver items if I can’t collect.. I’ve been with the practice 65 years so they know I was born with rare condition, and that’s reason for my health issues. Sorry to moan, best regards, Jean x

You shouldn’t be having such hassle Jean and I hope it’s all sorted out soon. We’re on system online and order what’s needed when it’s due. The prescription then goes to the pharmacy and they deliver within three working days. All working well so far.

Wishing you well xxxx❤️

thanks, yes I’m on system on line, very good, script goes directly to pharmacy who then deliver, I’m very grateful for their good service. However they need email from surgery before they can provide medication, and surgery are not doing it. Got fingers crossed it’s done soon. best regards, Jean xx

My pharmacy orders the script for me and I get a text to say when it’s in. I suppose the problem occurs if gp surgery won’t provide a script as happened for my rescue pack a few years ago. Take care. I hope you get all your meds soon Jean xx

Have you tried ordering them anyway? I suggest emailing the practice manager personally, pointing out the problem and that by neglecting to review or make these meds available to you the practice are failing in their duty of care towards you. That is a precurser to a formal complaint. What an absolute pest!Good luck, I hope you get a result

Oddly, when my prescription is up for review, I have been told simply to write 'please review these items' on the order form and it is done. Hardly seems worth bothering with. Good luck in sorting out this unnecessary mess. xxx

I just ignore my review date and order my meds as usual and have never had a problem in receiving them.

Hi Morrison.

With my GP practice when items come up for review they are looked at my the in-house pharmacist. If I have had the relevant tests/reviews then the meds are authorised for another 12 months. If I haven’t had the necessary tests then I am not allowed to reorder. I’m guessing it is the same for you.

Last year I had my asthma review but at the year end my meds were blocked. I rang the surgery and they issued some for me but they were not put back on repeat. I rang again and a nurse rang me straight back and put them on repeat.

Also, like you my surgery is now part of a larger group. All of the post/emails etc go to a different surgery where they are read and then put onto the system where my GP can access them. It certainly holds things up. Many a time I have had my copy of something and rung my GP to be told to ring again in a week as “it is not in the system yet.” Sorry, that is a very long winded way of saying not to be too concerned who your consultant’s communications are addressed to, your own GP will be able to access them once they are on the system.

As for your prescription, keep ringing. If, like us you have the dreaded options, try the prescription line first. If that doesn’t succeed try the appointments line. ( I often find I get more joy on the latter.)

Hi Jean, i have a repeat prescription on 4 items. The pharmacy has an arrangement whereby I text them on WhatsApp from my mobile phone. They acknowledge the request for a repeat prescription and they contact the GP (next door, prob by email) and 2-3 days later the pharmacy text me back on WhatsApp to say the prescription is ready for collection. I echo Littlepom's reply. Very best wishes. David.

I had my drugs come up for annual review, no action from gp, so pharmacist would not issue them.

I got the inhouse pharmacy person at the gp surgery to talk to the pharmacist for an immediate drug issue, and then hassle the gp to do the review.

I would try the same approach. If that fails try to talk to the gp practice manager as you want to know how to do a complaint. If that fails do a formal complaint

I had my 6 monthly blood tests for my repeat batch prescription two weeks ago and for the first time in3 years I was offered a face to face appointment to discuss the results. As this was for three weeks later I would have run out of medication but the surgery pharmacist immediately issued a one off prescription to cover the gap. I find that if I require a rescue pack I have no problems as long as I bypass the reception and press 2 for the surgery pharmacy. No long wait to be answered either. x

I went fora blood test for my bone med. I said I’ll have to make an appointment for a review. The nurse doing it said this is your review. ??? It’s mad isn’t it.

My GP will still give me my meds even if it is past the review date! Would your pharmacy phone the GOP for you and ask? My GP had a special line for health professionals to call.

I dont know why life has to be so difficult all of a sudden. It seems the doctors and their systems have put us all in turmoil. Perhaps this one is to make people have a review. I have review dates on my paper prescription and never hear anything from the surgery but it doesn't seem to affect what I order. I hope you get this sorted Jean and can get back to normal x

These surgeries are a nightmare! I don't think I've ever had a meds review. If you have patient access or the nhs app try contacting the surgery that way. Sometimes a comment on their facebook page can trigger a reaction too. Good luck!

Hi Morrison 10, I couldn’t order any drugs on online recently. The reason being was that I hadn’t had a meds’ review. The frustrating aspect was I had tried to book a review but couldn’t get an appointment😅 Finally a future appointment was made for said review which allowed me to order meds but just over the phone which was more time consuming. However I am very lucky that I have a brilliant GP. Best wishes Marlybee

It all depends on your area and your surgery. It’s so sad. My surgery installed pharmacists so if they’re any problems we can contact them, and they usually call up and do the reviews, and ask if we’re having any problems with our medications, and if we have any medication issues, like yours, we can speak to them and get it sorted out.

hi Morrison10

I would totally agree with the advice to go ahead and email the Surgery as most forum users suggest, reminding them of their duty of care, and your worry.

Best of luck

Hi, ive used ultbro about 6 years, originally before had Nebuliser, now use it between two daily sessions when I wear mask and inhale steam. Think it helped originally, more difficult to judge now but think it does. Good luck. Jean

I hope u managed to get yr meds.i put a note at the bottom if i need rescue meds replacing or something not on list, usually with no prob.mines a group practise+ it's awful ringing,I've been 25th in queue. Receptionists make decisions way out of their league,at times imo.i need an urgent scan again,at short notice + need blood tests prior - NO chance at drs.these big group mergers seem a backward step to me

I’m getting medication delivery tomorrow, think it’s all items that haven’t been reviewed. My pharmacy tried to deliver them Friday, but must have been later than usual and didn’t hear doorbell as was Nebulising. I will post on here what happens. Best regards, Jean
