I have been prone to URT infections for years. My cough got very bad in March 2022, finally got referred for a CT scan in August. My GP referred me to the Respiratory clinic in September and still waiting. No mention of Bronchiectasis, until today 5.1.23 when I went to the local community hub as no GP appts I have been very bad for a week, slept, when I could, in the chair. The nurse read my CT report and told me and that is how I found out I have it, both lungs but the left is the worst. Any practical tips, other than antibiotics gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance.

Hi , I am sorry I know little about your condition , but ALUK have a helpline open 5 days a week for UK residents …office hours .

0300 222 5800 .

Best wishes

I'm sure others will answer more fully, but try and expedite the referral and ask GP to try and make sure it is to a specialist who specialises in bronchiectasis rather than just a general respiratory consultant. You will then get looked after well.

You should have an emergency pack of antibiotics.... high strength and 2 weeks supply....for exacerbations. Try to provide a sputum sample for culture before starting the antibiotics. You should see a respiratory physiotherapist who will teach you lung clearance.

It takes a while to get a grip on the condition and understand how your body is affected and when you are getting unwell and need antibiotics.

Good luck, but the main thing is getting the referral expedited.

Thats shocking. You need to find the name of a respiratory doctor that specialises in Bronchiectasis and go back to your GP and insist on a referral to them. You may have to wait a while but your GP should be glad of the help the consultant will give you. In the mean time look up active cycle of breathing on YouTube to enable you to get rid of some of the gunk. I think BLF do a good booklet on Bronchiectasis and you could try searching for it on here as there’s been a lot of people in your position. Drink plenty of fluids and sleep propped up. I’ve slept in a chair before now too. You should be prescribed something like carbocistene to help thin the mucus. With proper help with your care you can get back to a normal life. Good luck x

Thanks, Mooka. I will add carbocistine to my list. I expect my GP will go on sick leave when I confront him with this.😀

Welcome to the forum , wb54. There are plenty of tips on this site about self help. Try and get an AeroBika or similar lung clearing device on prescription or through the internet to help you with your breathing. And try to do a little gentle exercise- there are some tailored for people with lung problems, some put on by the British Lung Foundation. Good luck.
