Weird thing ever happened to me

So i was diagnosed with bronchiectasis last year and with continuous infections throughout the winter season my lungs and pseudomonas in it were calmed down as the sun begin to shine more and the onset of summer begun. I had clear sputum. Very light cough. No weakness, I was in the best of my health. What happened is after my family developed a viral cough. After I woke up the next day the sputum was full of gunk😭😭😭 how in the world is this happening to me like in one night it infected me so much that I started to have a fever. Anyways my bad luck that my doctor is in the middle east due to a conference and here I am suffering from this. I went to the GP which I didnt wanted to, he knew something about bronch and gave me Avelox, three days have past but nothing is improved. I want to start cipro as I am colonized by pseudomonas and my doc office isnt responding. What would you do in this situation I just need some advise. I have my final exams after 3 days😭😭😭 What a bad luck I have seriously…

Upon my visit I insisted him to prescribe me cipro but he said avelox would work. It didnt. I am starting cipro on my own as I cant risk it further😮‍💨

Hi, if it's a viral infection the antibiotics may have very little effect. Speak to you GP again and see what they say.

Have you been taught how to clear your lungs? It's a good way to help to control the gunk especially during a viral infection.

I'm not medically qualified, just my advice.

Pseudomonas is a little devil. It sits there hiding and at the first sign that a virus infection is rocking the boat it has one heck of a party! Since 1986 this has happened to me every time.

Three days is not long for an antibiotic to work and avelox is a quinelone like ciproxen. Although my consultant ( who is co chairman of the British Thoracic Society) says that cipro is the only effective oral antibiotic against pseudo. You should have been given 14 days antibiotic for bronch.

My consultant always says to persevere for seven days and if not feeling better, the next step for me is IV. I would say give it the seven days and if no improvement go back. A change to cipro might then be a good idea.

I’m sorry that you have the complication of your exams. Can you get a delay because you are ill. It is very difficult to concentrate when you are ill. What do they do about others who become ill when they are to take an exam?

I do hope that you get this sorted out and feel better soon.

Don’t Forget To Get All Of This Gunk Out Of Your Lungs To Prevent More Partying !

you have provided me great information Littlepom. The fever has stopped and I feel I am okay to give the exams. The doctor had prescribed me avelox for 7 days but I did a hurry as I was stressed and stopped it after three days. What a fool I am. I’ve tried to contact my doctor but he’s not responding. I’ve decided to start cipro myself as it has worked many times for me. I do have some weakness now, not any fever but a green sputum. I am afraid that the infection would double up and return. Should I start cipro or linger on until I feel bad so that my exams are somehow passed. What do you suggest?

My University does not have a policy for sick candidates as the exams are finals. I’m afraid if I skip it would have an effect on my GPA.

The Last time I visited my doctor, he advised me to start colistin due to frequent exacerbations. It was not available in the local pharmacies near me, and unfortunately we don’t have a good medical set up over here as compared to the UK. I am waiting for someone to bring colistin for me from abroad.

Due to lack of healthcare over here, every month I have an infection. And every time its this pseudomonas. Sometimes I wonder what would be happening with my other organs due to side effects of these antibiotics. And yes, I can not afford private healthcare so bronch is a big deal for me. We even have a sputum culture very expensive over here. All of these factors are making me depressed.

NHS looks really a blessing to me

well I can’t advise you what to do. It would have been better if you had finished the seven days avelox and also returned to yourGP and pointed out that the guidelines for bronchiectasis states14 days antibiotic for an exacerbation. and seven days is treatment for copd or an infection in people who do not have a lung condition. Three days is going to do nothing except encourage the bacteria to fight to overcome it. Thesame goes for seven days. Inbronch it will just come back.

Still. having green sputum dicates that the infection is still in full flow. If I was due to take an exam and I had 14days cipro at home I would take that, the whole course. Then I would print offthe bronch guidelines and take them. to educate my GP. Do you have a bronch specialist? Because they should be telling your GP about the guidelines.

Hi, just catching up. Your response to take full 14 day course of Cipro sounds best to me. I was born with PCD and have had lot of infections. It’s not good taking few days of antibiotic as I’m told this can strengthen infection. Good luck to all, best regards, Jean

You really are unlucky Warrior! Feel sad for you. Avelox sounds right but if its viral then it won't help. Even so, make sure you take it. But I would talk again to my GP and tell; him/her it isn't working.
