Tonight painting is again two square canvases, The first a colouful misty daybreak.

The second is inspired by Canadian Folk Artist Maud Lewis Black Cat at Cowley Abbott.

Maud Lewis was a cripple to RA amongst other things - She left the safety of her aunts home, to find work as a live in housekeeper.

The house was tiny in fact one up and one down. The room was 4.1X 3.8Ms -The upstairs was a loft with one bed -

She was later to marry Everett who would help her with her art - Getting her paint and brushes, both not very good.

She did however despite being a cripple, and was in pain much of the time, manage to sell some painting,

She did not makea lot of money - She like many artist before and after her, was rich AFTER her death in 1970.

Thank you for sharing your latest paintings. I hadn’t heard of Maud Lewis so I googled her. I love her paintings. It’s good to see how other people overcome their physical difficulties.

I don’t know which I like best Ern, I love the sky on the first one , you are so good with colour , but the 2nd one is so charming I think Maud would’ve loved it .

Thank you Val - I think the sunrise is second best as Maud really captures imagination with her bravery.

I can see the similarity with Maud Lewis’s cats. I like both, particularly how bright and colourful they are.

How lovely to see you mention Maud Lewis Ern. I love her work, such a fabulous artist and I have her book. Her home was a painting in itself. Your black cat is gorgeous and immediately reminds me of her.

I think the first painting reflects Maud's spirit and determination. Plus a brightness to how she was finally celebrated. Excellent. xx

Lovely paintings Ern. Both very colourful and very summery. When you post two paintings together it’s hard to choose a favourite. 🤔 I do like your inspired version though ,of the maud Lewis black cat. 🐈‍⬛ I didn’t know the story behind her paintings. Thank you for the information and sharing your paintings. xx

The holiday was ace- looking at wildlife in the Brecks- just my cup of tea. i hope yours will be as good. xxxx

Ern007 in reply to Alberta56

Sounds good Chris, I like wildlife - I used to like going to Yorkshire, but these days it's Blackpool becaus eit's flat. I like the sea. xxxx

Alberta56 profile image

The Brecks are a little known area in Suffolk and are flat as Blackpool, one reason I thought of holidaying there. It was nice to see all the parent birds raising young.

Norfolk is nice full stop and East Anglia is famous for being flat. It is nice the gorse and Scottish Pines where I am are not on the flat. I know how good it is to see birds rearing their young, early part of our marriage we raised Budgies and Love Birds, as we had a large aviary.

Although it must be good to watch tits and marsh tits from the bird watching stations - Little wonder you liked that Chris, xx

The bits of east Anglia where I used to cycle are far from flat. ( Puff, puff.) And further south is the Essex Alps. 😀😀🗻🗻.

I was thinking most of East Anglia was like the Norfolk Broads -Village I live in is flat, but Lancashire as a whole is not.x
