Just wondering why I have to see a Respiratory Medical Consultant, when I am already attending a Respiratory Consultant, for 18 months & have been diagnosed with a lung fungal infection, I have been prescribed 4 per day of Intaconozole 100 mg capsules & I have to say that I feel very well, so why am I being referred to Respiratory Medical Consultant when I am still attending Respiratory Consultant? Be most grateful if anyone can help with my question, as I am at a loss.. Many thanks to all .. Primrose 123.. xx.

a respiratory medicine consultant is also another way of saying ‘a consultant who specialises in respiratory medicine.’

hello Primrose. Is the appointment in the same clinic or at the same hospital that you have been attending? Sometimes they simply change the title of the person you are seeing. After all, a respiratory medical consultant is the same thing as a respiratory consultant. They are both medical.

I can’t answer that but I’d snap it up if I were you. The hospital I go to (the Brompton) has various sub-specialisms within respiratory medicine so, for example, one of the consultants I sometimes see is an expert in fungal infection, another has a special interest in immunology, etc. I’m glad you’re doing well on the itraconazole because once it takes hold aspergillosis can cause a lot of lung damage

As Elenordigby says. Fungal infectections can be serious. I’ve just had another infection and am being referred back to the Consultant. From what I understand we all breathe in the same air but some of us are allergic to a certain mould spore that is always in the air. Then a fungal ball can grow in the lungs or tubes leading too. The Itraconazole keeps the mould down. I’m taking Itraconazole until I see the Consultant in May. I’m only on two a day though. It can be a serious disease. Sometimes you have to have the mould ball removed. So this is why they want you to see someone.
