Suggestions on consultants to see please

Hi,

My local respiratory nurse has "upgraded" my asthma from acute to chronic and suspects I might have fixed airways now and wants me to see a specialist and have a CT scan. The down side is I have just found out it going to take 20 weeks to get a scan and 40 weeks to see a consultant.

I am fortunate enough to have private medical cover but looking online there so many options of people to go and see. So the question is who to pick?

Does anyone out there have anyone they can recommend as a brilliant asthma specialist/ chest consultant in Kent or London?

Thank you.

Hi, I couldn't name anyone however, I've read and heard of extremely good things about The Royal Brompton in London. Hopefully someone with better knowledge of fixed airways and more complicated asthma will be along soon with some names from the RB. Good luck

Affiliated to Imperial College London which is what you need for the best & up to date treatment. In SW3 I believe 🙏

I should have mentioned runningdream that I was referred to St George's, University Hospital SW17 near my then home in 2013. I was a novice then and wouldn't recommend it although that's 11 years ago. I'd hope it's changed and the Prof I saw is long gone.

One approach is to look up your local private hospital and find a private consultant who also does asthma for the NHS at your local NHS hospital

If you go to that consultant privately he or she can bridge the gap between the NHS and the private sector nicely.

I agree with Peege the Brompton Hospital is one of the best hospitals in London. Also if you look at the wellbeck private clinic they have a list of consultants that specialise in different respiratory diseases. These consultants also work for the NHS so maybe your doctor could also refer. Good Luck x

How wonderful to have private cover, and not have to rely on our creaking nhs 😊 I’ve seen several asthma consultants at the Brompton and I’ve given you links to the two I would especially recommend. The Brompton’s private clinic is very convenient because it’s right next door to the main hospital, so it’s easy to get any tests and scans done.

As it happens I was leaning towards Dr James Hull. Have you used him before then?

Yes, he’s really good, thinks outside the box. Also he’s very approachable. I realised after my post that he’s a professor now, although he looks so young!

You’re very welcome! His secretary - who from memory is called Gareth - is really helpful too 😊

Royal Brompton has an excellent reputation, they do have one of the few aspergillosis clinics in the country and their respiratory clinics are highly regarded
