I have pluresy, for the first time in 5 days I can finally take a deeper breath. How soon after you start to feel better, obviously not yet. Would you say it is safe to go back to work?

Thanks in advance.

I was in so much pain when I had it, I couldn't. Thinking of returning to work is good then!

It's great that you feel well enough to return to work, but I would advise caution, or you could be back to square one. Get medical advice which is not available here. 😉

If she feels well enough to return tho, that is a good sign. i don't know if pleurisy is an infection, as my doctor couldn't prescribe any thing for it, just had to let it run its course.

This is something to discuss with your gp. If I’m reading your post correct you have been unwell for 5 days?? If so I would be surprised if you are well enough to return to work yet. I have had pleurisy several times and definite wasn’t well enough to return to work after such a short period of time. Even once infection had gone it took time to recover sufficiently to return to work.

I don’t know what work you do and how physically demanding it is but as said it will take time for body to recover from being so poorly. As well as being able to “take a deep breath “ you need to be able to care for yourself properly for example make meals, keep home clean, go for a walk and so on without any ill affects. If you rush back to work you run the risk of becoming unwell again very quickly. As a former manager I preferred people to stay off sick until they were better, rather than have someone return to work and then go off again a week or so later.

As suggested you shouldn’t discuss with your gp. If you need longer time off you will need to speak with gp anyway to arrange a “fit note”.

I wish you better very soon.

Glad you are feeling better, it took me weeks to be better enough for work after pleurisy

I agree with the above replies. I've had pleurisy a few times, two of those pneumonia followed after two weeks - and that took even longer to recover from. I'd give yourself more time if you can - and I would take vitamin c to help fight infection (because you haven't been able to breathe properly mucus can remain in your lungs and linger in a nice warm wet environment to grow bacteria needing antibiotics).

Thank you, definitely need abx now. Just about to phone Gp. I want to run before I can walk. Never had anything like this before. Worried as need to work for pennies.xx

It’s a difficult one, I understand. Obviously I don’t know your personal circumstances. Do you receive sick pay or are you on a contract and not receive pay when don’t work? It’s just I know from experience that trying to work before health has improved can be risky and lead to needing far more time off, than being patient initially.

Also having had both pleurisy and pneumonia more times than I can count 😢. Recovery really has taken some weeks. Having said which the initial strain of pleurisy I had was particularly bad and maybe you are luckier and can return to work far quicker. Just be cautious.

Thank you, worse again today, just need to be patient, sadly just started a new job, so no sick pay yet

I totally get it Lucy, I've been there myself. Trouble is, if you don't start Abs asap the longer it'll take to get better & back to work. P ××

When I had pleurisy I was back in work quickly but put myself on light duties (benefit of being in a small company) ... it did however take 3 months for it to go away/heal
