Icouldn't take the tablet medications for osteoporosis they upset my stomach, so have been offered it by drip at the hospital it takes about an hour they said.

Bikergrove. I am on the IV infusions as I couldn't tolerate the tablets. Little needle in the back of your hand, comfy chair to sit on, and at my local hospital endless cups of tea!! Yes, allow around an hour. 15 mins for actual infusion, then a plain solution to flush the IV, then a little while to check you are feeling ok. Read the side effects leaflet carefully. Whichever ones you get, they should only last a few days. Worth it to protect the old bones!!!

Hi! I have Bronchiectasis, COPD, asthma and I have oseopaenia of the spine and hip and osteoporosis of the forearms.

My worst time to cough is when I'm getting out of bed in the morning as it often catches me before I'm properly upright, or when I go to pull the bedroom curtains back. Sometimes it waits until I'm on my way to the loo!

If I can support myself on something I'm not too bad, but if it catches me and I've nothing to hang on to, it's painful.

I think my problem is with the sudden contraction of muscles in my lower back, rather than actually my spine.

Are you linked into the RESP team of nurses? They may be able to advise you regarding both your coughing and your loss of appetite. If you are not linked in to any kind of support, I would contact your GP and tell them about the coughing and the weight loss as there may be something they can offer to help you eg a referral to a consultant (if you don't already have one) and, if you're lucky, a referral to a dietician or nutritionist. Also, perhaps you now need a more intensive treatment for the osteoporosis than you are on at the moment.

I can imagine that you are almost afraid to cough these days as you must be afraid of hurting your back. Perhaps something like a nebuliser or steam cup would help to loosen the phlegm and make it easier to shift without violent coughing. I presume you already know about the Active Cycle of Breathing but if not, there are videos on You Tube where physiotherapists show you how to do it. Something else that might make it easier to shift the phlegm is an Acapella device. Your GP can prescribe one for you if you don't already have one.

I don't think there's anything worse than back pain so I do hope you are able to get something sorted out. I think it's definitely time for you to ask for professional help again, even if it's only to reassure you that you're not damaging your back when you cough. Worrying doesn't help us at all, does it?!

All the best, xx Moy
