Tight feeling in chest on exertion

Not quite sure whether I’m posting this in the right place but here’s my post.

When I’m walking to my daughters school I always get a very tight feeling across my chest going all the way across , it doesn’t reach my shoulders or go anywhere else . If I walk a bit too quickly then I start feeling dizzy and my head feels kind of fuzzy. I have a pacemaker for tachy brady and heart pauses , my cardiologist assured me it’s not my heart causing this . I had pericarditis December 2020, I have been diagnosed with costochondritis which is getting more painful .

Hi and welcome, do you have trouble breathing or does it happen every now and then. I personally would speak to a GP, they could maybe send you for breathing tests or advise you what is best for you. Sorry I couldn't be anymore helpful, will you please let us know how you get on. Have a good night and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx 🌹

Hi Westie, I don’t have any ideas about you enquiry but it might be an idea to speak to your GP about it. Sorry I’m no help!!

Strangely though, I just spent Sunday in a&e with Costochondritis…it was really painful …sharp kind of pain in my chest, left side and it was worse when I breathed in and lying down. Then it was really painful sitting up from lying down. Thankfully it’s going down a bit now. Still painful breathing in but not the severe pain like Sunday.

Anyway, I hope you manage to find out what’s causing it soon! It sounds like you have a lot to cope with already!

I hope you are feeling better now , costochondritis is so painful , were you given any medication when you went to hospital ? Since having my pacemaker I am struggling with my health , it seems like one problem leads to another . Take care xx

Dear Westie, Yes, it definitely was really painful! I’d had a similar thing happen a few weeks before in the night but it passed after 15 mins, whereas this didn’t.

The dr offered me codiene but it triggers my pancreatitis, and he offered morphine but it makes me sick. Because of other health stuff pain killers and anti-inflammatories are a bit tricky for me. Thankfully the pain seems to have gotten better quite a lot now…other than when I take a deep breath in.

Do you take anything?

Sorry I’ve sidetracked on your post! 🌺

Glad you are feeling better and I hope you are soon completely pain free abs it stays that way too . The lost of medication I take is getting longer , I started off on naproxen and paracetamol , my gp has since added tramadol , I tried taking amitriptyline and nortriptyline but they made me so drowsy so I couldn’t take them, I’m now trying gabapentin . I got some deep freeze gel to try and it really helps . Yale care xx love jude

Hello Westie,

The only thing I can really say is request that your GP to run some tests to see how your lung function is going. There are many reasons why you might be feeling the way you are and it's not always the lungs but if it is he might be able to refer you to a lung consultant?

With very best wishes,

Cas xx 🍀

Hi Westie, I agree that the cause of your breathlessness needs investigating. I hope that your GP will do some tests for you. Best wishes.

I'm sure such bad chest pain must affect yr breathing.id walk slower, take your time.ive lung diseases and find " controlled breathing" so useful.u can read up online to learn how to do it

Hi Westie, I experienced similar tight feeling across my chest whenever I had to walk fast or especially up an incline. In my case, it turned out to be angina and following an angiogram, I had one stent put in place.I would say it’s best that you see your Gp and /or cardiologist. Take care!

My gp wanted to send me to hospital to be e seen in ambulatory emergency care , I’ve been sent there many times and their priority is to rule out blood clots and when they know i don’t have one then Ive been sent home with no answers as to what is causing my problems . Everything was ok, bp etc but as I’ve started getting chest pain when I’m walking up hill she wants me checked over . Today I had no one to collect my daughter from school so I’m going to a&e tomorrow as it’s hubby’s day off . Gp was quite happy for me to go tomorrow , problem is that when I go to hospital everything is always ok because I’ve been sitting resting . I’m quite sure they’ll test for a blood clot then send me home when that’s ruled out . How do I get them to do something about how I feel walking up hills?

in reply toWestie2012

I had a blood clot that went to the lungs back in 2017 thought I was unfit finding stairs and going uphill difficult but no I wasn't unfit I was poorly!

I thought maybe I’m just out of shape that’s why I’m getting more breathless than usual .

in reply toWestie2012

Better to see your gp and get it checked early than be sorry or end up in a and e like I did as I didn't get treated in time!

I haven’t walked up to the school or up any steep hills for a few weeks as jr little girl has been off school , at first I thought my symptoms were because I’m just out of practice walking up hill but now I’m getting chest pains and breathlessness after 2 weeks of walking to school I’m not sure what to think.

I hope you can get A&E to investigate properly. When I felt breathless walking up hill it was the prelude to a heart attack-no other symptoms, Your breathlessness and pains need proper investigation. Good luck.

in reply toAlberta56

That's what happened with me when I had blood clots in the lungs I had problems walking upstairs or uphill and had a dry cough that I thought was a cold but no it wasnt!

When I was short of breath walking on the flat short distances I was worried and had taken myself to a and e and my ex boyfriend asked me how did I manage to walk into a and e seriously ill and I said because I wanted to live!

At a and e I had seen the triage nurse who was nice and had said about a cough that wouldn't go away and how i had dismissed it as a cold and he had said how with colds you get a runny nose!

They kept me in overnight to keep an eye on me on the respiratory ward and then sent me home after dinner on the following day with Anticoagulant medication.

I was terrified though throughout the whole ordeal!

That’s a bit worrying , my little girl was off school for two weeks with PIMS so I haven’t been walking to the school, I thought my symptoms might be because I’m a bit out of practice walking uphill but it’s getting worse .

I went to get checked in hospital , my infection markers were raised so I’ve been started on colchicine again as a precaution incase it’s the start of pericarditis again (I was very unwell with pericarditis and an effusion December 2020) and I’ll be having a cardiac mri. I thought I’d just have a blood test and ecg then be sent home when the tests were normal . I’m glad I went as I was undecided whether to leave it a few more days to see how things went . Had excellent care today and I felt like I was listened to properly .
