Scans and xrays. will show lung damage but not the cause. Scans give more detail and pick up things an xray cant ie Bronkiestasis. Smoking is only one cause thear are many others.
An X-ray will show hyperinflated lung which some people with COPD will have, whereas a CT scan will show damage to lungs consistent with COPD.
If you feel you have lung disease please ask for a spirometry test at your Gps. To determine either asthma or copd. If copd is diagnosed you can then ask for a referral to a respiratory physician and ask for a ct scan to determine what type of copd and how serious.
X rays only usually good for diagnosing spaces and mass in lungs ie cancer/ pneumonia .Good luck.
