CT scan normal?

Pollyposh1 profile image

I have been diagnosed with copd and bronchiectasis for many years approximately 10 with my consultant saying its chronic. However I recently had a CT scan and received my results saying everything looked fine. Am I missing something? Surely if I was that bad would not something show on the scan ?

I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis from a CT scan. Can you contact your consultant and ask what is going on?

I was diagnosed with the bronchiectasis and copd from a lung function test that my consultant done he never gave me a ct scan . I'm guessing my history of constant chest infections and breathlessness he diagnosed me. Then just recently through a government scheme that are trying to detect any signs if lung cancer early on they contacted me for the ct scan wasn't through my consultant. Sorry for the long reply.

Perhaps see if yr consultant can access it.sounds like u may be lucky,so far.bronchiectasis needs a scan &/or bronchoscopy to diagnose it so if ct can't be accessed,I'd insist on one.id think of stopping smoking as it's a major cause of lung cancer, copd + irritant to the lungs& can cause build up of tarry fluid.yr choice though

Thank you for your reply. Yes I think I will see if I can get an answer from my consultant as doesn't make sense. I know I'm so trying to get the willpower to stop smoking it's so hard. Thanks again.

The absolute best thing you can do is to stop smoking! Ask your GP for information on any support services there may be for this in your area. Good luck : )

I think diagnosis from a lung function test is a bit of guess work, there are a lot of conditions that can cause a low reading including cancer, a proper diagnosis should by via CT scan and broncoscopy I have emphysema and Aspergillosis and I didn’t start lung function tests until after the diagnosis. The lung function test were only to provide an indication if the lungs we’re getting worse or remaining stable

I am sorry if this maybe disillusions you but simply take it as a warning; CT scans are as reliable as the person reading them. My daughter had a brain tumour from the age of seven months which was operated on and, at the age of 49 had endless scans. I repeated and repeated that the tumour was definitely active but kept receiving the reply that CT scans showed nothing had changed. I demanded an MRI scan which finally proved me right before her death two months later. One consultant had taken notice of what I had said and took the trouble to read it properly. This was at the John Radcliffe in Oxford and they apologised. If you are concerned you have the right to ask for a second opinion.

Everything fine possible means no detrioration since last scan. My wife is due for scan next week. I`ll let you know what her results are. Have a good day, Chris.

Chronic does sound serious, but in medical speak it means it is slow developing further. I have a chronic blood disorder that I am more likely to die with, rather than from.

Chronic does not necessarily mean severe but does mean it has been going on for a period of time without getting better.

Best ask for detailed report from people that ordered the ct scan- when you have that you can then compare- if it was looking specifically for cancer then maybe all find means no cancer?!

Thank you all for your replies. I shall contact my consultant and those that done my ct scan . Great group of people on here. I have learnt more on this site in a year than the 10 years with my gp and consultant. Says a lot really.

you could ask for a copy of your CT scan results

You will need to clarify. Bronch does not disappear from a scan. Sorry no experience of other lung conditions. x

I am . I thought exactly the same. Thank you.

Get a copy of the scan. See if the same person read it. Even knowing that would be helpful. Not everyone is experienced in reading Bronch. xx

Pollyposh1 profile image
Pollyposh1 in reply toDottie11

See what you mean . I've e mailed them explaining what my consultant has said I've got including bronchiectasis see what they say and definitely get a copy to send to my consultant see what he says.
