Does anyone experience worsening of their asthma after drinking white wine? It’s happened to me twice this week. I didn’t think anything of it until the last asthma episode.

Wine struggle?
Definitely - it always used to happen. I havent drunk alcohol for years (medical reasons) but remember it well, it was horrid.
I was told by an asthma nurse that it's the sulphites. Doesn't always say that they contain them on the label.
That's why I drink Rose Vino. Years ago with white Vino it gave me massive Heartburn and I always refused Champagne, real or fake, still gave me lots of Indigestion problem hence the Breathing Suffered.(Well Before COPD Diagnosis). I only have 1 glass of Rose with Diet Lemonade. Change your Wine. Good Luck XXX C.
You could try an organic or sulphite low or free wine and see how you get on. I get this too, but it can vary with different brands.
Or abandon wine and find a sulphite-free alternative. 🥂
Hello Chatterbox, yes I have found wine affects my asthma too. Good tip from Beech. My asthma nurse said this can be quite common.
Yes! I used to drink wine and white did something weird to me so I only drank red. But I have been alcohol free for almost three years now. Take care. xx 🙋🐕
Yes i find it affects me and I only ever had one small glass. Have also being affected by waking with a terrible headache, have stopped my one glass and did not have a headache this morning. Fingers crossed.
Sopsx
Yes, do avoid sulphites. As for heartburn, I’ve worked out different wines/grapes affect me differently. I can’t drink Sauvignon any more as feels very acid in my chest but am fine with Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. Took ages to work that out though 😊
Yes, white wine does tighten my chest too. I now drink rose or red. Maximonkey
Thats an interesting one, its supposed to be red wine that causes breathing changes. The nurse is correct it is the sulphites but white wine as less I beleive than red. You are correct too there is no indication of how many sulphites are in the wine only its alcohol strength. Might be worth asking Asthma Uk to campaign for better labling of these goods. Have you tried different wines including Rosa as an alternative? Or maybe a different drink. I don't drink so its not a problem for me. Take care
Try drinking red instead
Hi Chatterbox,
Yes, I've noticed that I become more breathless after drinking red wine, but have also found that it is not so bad with a higher quality red and with organic wine.
I don't touch any other alcohol so can't really comment on other drinks, but would be interested to know why sulphites affect breathing.
My husband makes his own wine. He happened to read the ingredients and found crustaceans. He is allergic to shell fish!
Have always had Astma now ÇOPD
Have never been much of a drinker but found wine always made my breathing worse. Would mention it from time to time to Doctor but back then 77now people thought it was all in the mind same as smoking as if I went anywhere near smoke or even different parts of the country was much worse due to pollution.
I have not had a drink for about 10 years now. Tried a chocolate liquer and that set me off!!
Take care🌈x
Hi yes drinking definitely causes breathless.
I have emphysema , vodka & wine make me breathless.
Unfortunately you may need to stop drinking I'm really not sure why this affects us.
Would be interesting if anyone has the answer.
Stay safe
