Does drinking wine affect your COPD? As yet I have no diagnosis due to Covid- although from what I read and my peak flow results I’m pretty sure I have unfortunately- I find I cough up more mucus during the night and I am more wheezy too . I have already given up red wine but I am finding that even white wine seems to be bad for me too - and I don’t mean bottles either - just a small glass or two !

I had this for years even before I was diagnosed with anything. Not coughing or wheezing, but a headache right above the top of my nose and my nose would block. Red wine was the worst. If I was offered wine I’d politely refuse and when pushed I would say it gives me a headache. I’m sick and tired of the number of times I’ve been laughed at and been told it is called a hangover.Like you, I wasn’t drinking a bottle, just half a glass, then headache.

Since I was diagnosed with asthma, I have been Googling a lot - I like to know the ins and outs of everything - and I have found out it is the sulphites within the wine that are the culprits.

So, yes, it could well be the wine!

Exactly the same with me T, the other thing some folks think is that youre either a killjoy or a recovering alcoholic 🙄

I'm not sure about this as I don't drink any alcohol, but I'm sure someone can help. Have a lovely day and let us know how you get on take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

Although I don't have copd since a very young age I realised that I couldn't drink wine, particularly wine from barrels it would always trigger sinus problems almost immediately. A wine expert once told me that I was drinking the wrong ones and to try young wines ie Beaujolais , Fleury, et al and pinot noir grape wines. It worked.

I drink little now apart from good prosecco, organic whites or Champagne. Spirits distilled in stainless steel is OK too. Cheap plonk is lethal and full of nasty stuff.

The moment I feel it in my head I stop & poor it in the nearest plant pot.

I agree with peege. I researched sulphites and realised they are the culprits. I tried many different grape varieties and have found one or two that suit me. I’ve also tried organic wine but not sure it made a difference. Cheap is definitely not good! Very good Prosecco and champagne are definitely worth a try. You can buy special bottle stoppers so you can have just one glass and keep the bubbles bubbling. Hope you find something to suit. It’s quite a process to find something to suit. Maybe try some very pale roses as well. 🥂

😊but do you have COPD ? If you do I really want to know if it makes your condition worse - sadly I think I must give up alcohol 😞

I was diagnosed 40 year ago with. COPD. Wine. has No affect whatever on my condition but we’re all different. I suggest you cease drinking it for ,say, a month and see how you go.

There are wines on the market that don’t contain sulphites so you could try one of those and see if it affects your lungs. You may find you don’t have to give up alcohol after all.

Ivanova have been drinking red wine since a heart attack 21 years ago when I was told the tannings in it were good for you ,I have had bronchiectasis a long time I had whooping cough when I was 4 and have had trouble with my lungs ever since ,it may not be good for everyone but I find it very relaxing in moderation

I’ve had severe COPD for more than 10 years. I drink wine, spirits and beer (probably too much wine) and have no intention of giving up. I do, however, have at least two alcohol-free days a week. I’m sure the booze isn’t great for my general health but it doesn’t seem to have any effect, negative or positive, on my COPD.

Still trying to crack the 2 alcohol free days Lol,mind you i am that far gone with emphysema what the hell and like you the alcohol doesn't seem to make any difference to my condition which is now virtualy terminal anyway so i might as well go out with a smile on my face.
