Promising I commented on both..thank you for looking for every bit of research findings

In fact this just confirmed that there's a lot we don't know about lungs ..

Yes I've seen it.. they are similar but not the same..A different point of view. 😉

in reply toLivefor

Really I will read your find again

It's not the same text and not the same words so sometimes we understand one better than the other..

I'm not an expert on this matter but I think a lot of what they affirm was not that clear..so who knows?

Maybe when we stop smoking this may halt the progression of copd..maybe

My hubby quit 6 years ago, worked a double allotment and went to the gym 4 days a week, but last year without warning he couldn't breathe & is now on 5lts of oxygen per minute 16 hours a day, he can just about go round the supermarket leaning on a trolley, then requires oxygen which we have to take everywhere.

Livefor profile image
Livefor in reply tothe-worried-wife

So sorry to hear that, was he already diagnosed when this happened or not,?

the-worried-wife profile image
the-worried-wife in reply toLivefor

He didn't know he had anything wrong until he had a medical for a job, they found signs of COPD. He stopped smoking which significantly reduces it's progress, but it lurks in the background & medication can stop deterioration up to a point. They have no idea what caused the sudden change in health but implied that often happens.

Thanks for answering this is very personal. I have heard that this could happen but I thought it was on the most several stages...hope your husband have more good days than bad...

I get it--I didnt get sick till I quit--That was 4 years ago--Im now on 02 24/7--and recently more stuff goin on--I also ended up with a-fib and chf--This stuff is poison and i think after a certain time if you get off with nothing wrong you are blessed--i dont see that much "mess with the bull you get the horns" MmeT

It doesn't. I quit smoking and 20 - 25 years later? EMPHYSEMA!

madametobacco49 profile image
madametobacco49 in reply tomorehope

I quit after 53 yrs because i had some good breathing tests and thought if im ever going to get out this is the time--4 mos after quitting(which was no easy affair) I started getting short of breath--it has been 4 years now--I have emphysema and heart failure(these often go hand and hand) and im on o2 24/7--can have it off a little when sitting-Next week i have to go in and get fluid drained off of lungs---so i think once you get past a certain stage--you are goin to have problems--It doesnt have to kill you to make you wish you were dead sometimes--I have been thru a lot in my life and nothing is worse then oxygen hunger--I think the most important msg is dont start--I think i was addicted from the first drag--It infuriates me cuz it was so glamorized back then and now us boomers are paying dearly--anyway--thats my 2 cents worth--quit and hope for the best but dont be surprised-if that big reward you think you are gonna get eludes you---MmeT

Livefor one thing is sure, stopping smoking slows down COPD diseases - I say that because COPD is an umberella for more than one lung aliments... I am 74 and stopped at 50, Really stopping smoking is the key .

The message is still positive dont you think

Did not for one second think it has I meant from cancer prospective obviously, one less thing to hopefully worry about. As you are already aware I am hoping for a breakthrough and obviously quitting smoking isnt it, or there would be no further need for research. Would be wonderful if just stopping smoking would halt copd. The article makes clear it does not reverse copd. But still hoping powderpuff

Livefor profile image
Livefor

What? Don't put words on my mouth. You don't know what I think I didn't say that this was a cure for copd.

Oh sorry as it was on about cancer and I responded to music post I just continued my train of thought as copd brings risk of lung cancer seeing that made me less fearful of getting lung cancer. I didnt think livefor saw it as a cure for copd, maybe my interpretation of what was meant when I respond was wrong. But good we cleared that up

Livefor profile image
Livefor in reply to

Emily I wasn't talking to you, but anyway if lungs and copd were simple and clear as many thought the cure was already a reality, as you know few time ago all affirm that lungs didn't repair themselves by any means even decades after you stopped smoking now they say it's possible, So I believe anything is possible....

in reply toLivefor

Sorry I am getting confused here. I was responding to powerpuff as I think this as I said early is good research from cancer prevention in lungs. I worry about that not quite sure why we are attacking each other. I just believe any research to do with lungs is positive.

That's true Emily..and I didn't shouted out with enyone too but I don't like when people put words on my mouth..to make things clear I didn't by any means affirm that by stop smoking will halt copd I said maybe 2x maybe ..and maybe it's a possibility not an affirmation, there's a big difference there that's all. Good night.

Emily this is why I dont comment much thesedays as I was attacked on here .I am a very Positive person but some are so negative and misinterpreted what I said. The person was taken off the site but it had an effect on me and really upset me. So these days I mostly look and listen. It's a shame as I have quite a lot of great advice having had COPD severe for 10yrs and still living a very active life and my input could help to out some minds at rest. Take care Emily x Sheila

I will always Support our Loyal members, I too at one time had an ugly reply, I stayed away for awhile. Stay Positive Hun as you are a "Bright Star" for COPD Sufferers. Love n Hugs. XXX C.

Good morning Carolina,

The ‘hidden’ member was me, I deleted my own posts which were not in anyway negative.

The thread, through confusion started not to be in keeping with the ‘spirit of the forum’, simple as that!

So far as I am aware, Lung Tissue is NON-regenerative. Once you have smoked and had lungs-full of nicotine, the lung tissue is stained and affected for ever. Maybe someone in the real Medical world would like to comment and advise, please!

Damage is damage is damage, I stopped smoking over 25 years ago but the damage I did smoking remains and slowly progresses.

Stopping smoking halts the rapid progress of COPD with it's multiple conditions but damage remains. The disease remains but stopping smoking slow down the progress and in many cases damage will be limited and some will reach a ripe old age. some will develop other issues other than COPD cause by smoking.. Take a tree for example hack it with an axe and it will be scarred - it can never regenerate the damage done, but left alone the tree will survive. hack at it more and disease will set in and the tree will not thrive... My whole point is the body will never be able to reverse scarring, just like the tree.

"emphysema" for example is none reversible under any circumstance - The only way to keep some kind of life is to stop smoking and slow down the disease and it's effects.

I myself since stopping smoking have been much better but after two X Ray showed a shadow and two CT scans confirmed a shadow and a PET Scan shows spread to Right Lung and they don't know exactly what it is.

Could be because I worked with coal, could be asbestos and even a drug for hear I am taking Amiodarone can cause lung damage it has already destroyed my thyroid - That is the same as smoking. foreign substance in lungs can and do cause CHRONIC DAMAGE.

I am taking Amiodarone for VT, SVT and AF and the problem is, one of the only safe drugs if you have COPD - Beta Blockers usual treatment can't be used mainly with people with "emphysema"

Long post i apologise but people should realise Chonic = Incurable and the only way not to get COPD is do not smoke or to limit it's progress is to stop smoking. My wife stopped smoking and never got COPD, I did and maybe worse....

Livefor profile image
Livefor in reply toErn007

I know that emphysema is non reversible, but I still believe that sooner or later science will be able to change that maybe with stem cells or something like that who knows..that's what I believe.

Ern007 profile image
Ern007 in reply toLivefor

Well I believe some diseases are not curable and never will be. If they could do it with emphysema - then why not cancer, heart disease and all other nasty's - The reason I believe is in natural science. natures way of keeping the population stable. If all disease was reversible that would mean everyone lived well over 100 - Who would feed us? Where would we all live.. I am not criticizing what you hope and believe will happen for the reasons given..

I stopped smoking at 40 diagnosed with COPD. I’m 83 now. A recent X-ray proved no change in my lungs since the last X-ray 2 years ago.

My PF remains the same 350 my oxy as 98

There’s hope out ther guys, hang on in.

Livefor profile image

Oh thank you, this gives me hope.😉

Ern007 profile image
Ern007 in reply togaribaldon

garibaldon - With respect everyone is not the same. You stopped smoking at a young age, hence your remarkable slow down in symtoms. I stopped smoking at 50 and at that time had FV1 predicted at 46% now it's in the 50% range. I have less flare ups than when I smoked by a large margin but the damage that was done is still there.. Oxy at 98 is fine, mine ranges from 98 to 82 mainly at rest.,,,Treat OXY results with caution, X Rays and a stethascope give the best diagnosis,,, Well you are 83 now and I hope you reach the age equal to your OXY reading - You are living proof that stopping smoking saves lives..

madametobacco49 profile image
madametobacco49 in reply toErn007

is your dr telling you 82 at rest is ok? They tell me anything below 88 for very long will cause brain damage--Id like to know so i could get offf this crap now and then--MmeT ps. stopping may save lives but it can be a miserable life sometimes--sorry to say

the-worried-wife profile image
the-worried-wife in reply tomadametobacco49

My hubby's range is from 76 to 88, only when he is resting with 5lt oxygen does he ever get to 92! This he has been told is ok as his body is used to it. Walking is really hard work for him but his brain is still as sharp as ever.

Ern007 profile image
Ern007 in reply tomadametobacco49

I have COPD not sleep apnea - My reading say on a 5 hour study can be fine, or my SATS will drop to 80 or more but quickly recover... In fact I have found some studies I have printed out tonight and and going to take them to GP - out of 4 hours I had many events some reaching the low 80s . Aprox a 5th of the time I was testing. Thing is the mean is normally 93 or 94 and that average has not seemed to have mattered, even when low peak was under 80.. I have had no bad effects thus far but recent tests will be given to my GP..

I grew up on secondhand smoke, parents smoked until age 50. Mom even smoked when pregnant, they didn’t know back then. My stepdad smoked 2 pack day and quit at age 55 but was around heated petroleum products/fumes and that’s why I think he developed COPD, he passed at age 76. Age 75 Mom had either MRI or CT and lung doctor showed me a few small black specs that he said was mild emphysema but she wasn’t going to die from it. So I believe quitting is in everyone’s best interest. After growing up with secondhand smoke, none of us 4 kids smoked

And to make matters even more confusing, there is a video from the Mayo clinic that says if you stop smoking you won't get any worse ( other than natural ageing). Three separate outcomes, all by the same group of ''professionals''.

The fact that the most recent articles from 2020 still say '' progressive lung disease'' within the first sentence speaks volumes.

I would love to believe this is true but my husband has just died from small cell lung cancer having not smoked for 35 years plus so I am afraid that I am struggling with the concept. I have COPD and am lucky that it remains moderate . Exercise and Pulmonary Rehab have both helped me.

My Condolences Hun, So Sorry for your Loss. You are doing the right thing with Exercise, this I swear by and I wear a "Fit Bit" to Monitor my daily steps & Movement. I am Stage 4 severe Emphysema. I am waiting to be called for my next Rehab (my7th course), in the meantime I go to Breathe Easy Exercise classes twice a week, have my Oxygen with me all times when out. Stay strong Hun. Hi again, Red Sox, hope thing are going well for you. Our practice Asthma nurse quit so I just saw a nurse and forgot to ask. They’ve stopped doing annual Spiro test for some reason. Not all good news, I’m wheezing like steamtrain at the minute

Just finished a course of Steriods. I had shingles in the eye and face August only really just recovering so just started back at the Gym after zilch exercise. Hoping it just the cold weather making me like this or I shall have to see my GP.

Take care x

I have an oximeter designed to record at night as well as daytime, I don;t believe I have Sleep Apnea as I would have headache on waking, However one morning I could not breath at all - When I recovered I uploaded data to my PC and at the end there was a dip in 02 levels.. My first thought was Sleep Apnea but later and after talk with GP. came to conclusion it was Sleep paralysis as I had a history of that. I have Emphysema and am classed as having COPD - Which is an umbrella for such as Bronchitis - if you have COPD you are right, you have Bronchitis or Emphysema or other obstructive nasty....

Hi Hacienda, lot of talkabout excercise I can’t ever recall any healthcare professional recommending to me any form of excercise. I fact I only really discovered the real benefits prior to a heart bypass many years ago Maybe if it was introduced from the outset of COPD diagnosis by Medics it may , to some degree allay the impact of lung disease. Having said that I’m aware some folk can’t excercise but I’m sure a good many would benefit.

( just my thoughts)
