As part of a piece of funded work Asthma + Lung UK are doing with NHSE on lower-carbon inhalers, we’re creating a short storyteller video, featuring someone who has had a positive experience of changing to a dry powder or soft mist inhaler. If you’re not sure what inhaler you have, you can find out here.

It would involve being filmed and answering a few questions about your inhaler and how you manage your lung condition. We would need a few hours of your time and can travel to your home. As this is part of a funded project, we can also compensate you for your time

For more advice on inhaler choices, visit the Asthma + Lung UK website. This includes advice on changing to a lower-carbon inhaler and how inhalers affect the environment.

And so do I

My chemist sent me Salbutamol instead of Ventolin, I tried it for a week and it was pretty useless. I have refused to go onto this again and think the reason for how it affects the environment is pretty poor and think it is more down to cost. Sorry Carol I dont want to take part in your survey but wanted to add that I have tried it x

Hi.My chemist did the same to me

I had to ring my doctor to change it.

They seem to be really pushing this at the moment so out it down to cost x

Hi, you mention reasons for changing inhalers is down to cost. Do you have any information you can share on that please? I am really interested to know the difference in coatings between the two.

Thanks

I can see no sensible reason to change an inhaler to one that doesn't work so have put it down to cost as I think the damage done to the environment is a very poor excuse and really don't believe the hype we are being sold. Sorry I dont mean this to be rude and is just my opinion.

Hi, thanks for replying. I haven’t taken your response as rude, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

It is just that you mentioned the cost issue between the two and I wondered what the evidence is for that? I am genuinely interested in facts and personally pleased that there is a CFC alternative.

Go well.

Thanks for your reply PauIine. I thought the Ventolin inhaler was cfc free x

From my understanding sadly they are not, though feel free to let me know if I am mistaken ?

The new Salamol is CFC free

Yes, that is why the prescribers are going CFC free. Enjoy the day.

I use Ventoline 4 times a day to open the airways for bronch They changed it to Salmol! I couldn't feel it was working, struggled and within a week I had an exasperation and needed antibiotics.

They put me back on ventolin and changed my prescription so I only get ventolin now. The same happened to my daughter who has asthma, she had an asthma attack and it didn't relieve her, luckily she had a ventolin in the house and that gave instant relief. I have heard of other cases.

So while there is a lot of people who are ok with Salmol, there are a lot that aren't ok with it and I think it is dangerous and think it should of been trialled before being rolled as a generic alternative when it is not for all.

Also it must be a cost thing because Ventolin is cfc free!

I have been using the Pulmicort & Bricanyl dry powder inhalers since mid 90s when my GP said he’d been made aware of the environmental impact of the ventoline inhalers.

Have to admit I thought he was a bit odd and was not sure what to believe but as I got on well with them I have been using them ever since.

It is only the last few years I realised that he was ahead of the times!

I’ve asked Carol, on the Asthma forum, healthunlocked.com/asthmalu... what the charity is doing to support people who can’t tolerate DPIs or salamol. I’m not expecting a reply

I like the new low carbon inhaler. I find it easier to coordinate the taking the dose with the breath in, compared to the older style where we have to synchronise the ‘push’ to propel the medication with the breath in. Great to know it is good for the environment too. 💚
