Glaxo is doing trials in some other vaccines and plan to report results this year and they also looking for similar success in vaccine for the treatment of COPD,

in reply toLivefor

To treat the condition??? Or prevent against condition???

powderpuff profile image
powderpuff in reply to

That’s not specified, the article doesn’t go into any detail at all - it’s more general & a forecast of what maybe in the pipeline.

in reply topowderpuff

That is what I was trying to find out and wonder how we could find out as wasnt sure if there was a vaccine that would in the future treat or prevent the condition

Livefor profile image
Livefor in reply to

I never heard of a vaccine too bu that doesn't mean we know all ..sorry for believe in science and in a company with results like Glaxo ..

in reply toLivefor

I never said not heard of vaccine that is a great find and I read treat the condition but wasnt sure what i was reading as i said

To me just the fact that we see more interesting in doing something gives me hope...I only wish better breathing or lungs for everyone suffering from COPD..

in reply toLivefor

I agree with you totally I just didnt get the vaccine part think if it had gone into more detail I would get what the article was saying

Livefor in reply to

Please don't misunderstand me I'm not judging you...

Didnt think that for a second

To treat THE condition...as I read on it..

powderpuff in reply toLivefor

GSK are looking into similar success (as the RSV vaccine) with a vaccine to treat COPD.

The article doesn’t specify anything about where they are in that process.

in reply topowderpuff

A vaccine is usually given to prevent something, confused as if we already have copd how can a vaccine prevent it, that was my confusion, I would like to know more

powderpuff profile image
powderpuff in reply to

That would indicate to me they’re looking at Genetics/Immunology in which case there’s a way to go with that yet.

in reply topowderpuff

They may not be a long way off just wish I fully understand article

I have a research scientist Son in Law who I’m sure I stretch to the limit at times with my requests for interpretations. Mind you he keeps my feet firmly on the ground!

in reply topowderpuff

Found the research trial I think it's a influenza vaccine off to bed as you know I dont know how to put link on here but I am sure a breakthrough is near

If a COPD vaccine is ever available, I wonder if, after receiving it, many COPD sufferers would resume smoking or not consider quitting, forgetting other smoking related dangers, like heart disease, stroke, asthma and cancer etc?

jackdup profile image

I certainly wouldn’t start smoking again.

Thanks for the info, but they are only trying to develop and test a mega vaccine against influenza to prevent acute exacerbations. In the second article you provided Livefor, it says "The effect of vaccination against two pathogens known to cause exacerbations (Non-typeable Haemophilus influenza [NTHi] and Moraxella catarrhalis [Mcat]) will be evaluated at pre-defined timepoints (scheduled study visits)" Let's hope it works, I would help a lot anyway.

in reply toINK45

It would indeed.

Good to see some research is being done, sometimes you wonder if COPD is being left behind

in reply tostamford1234

There is lots of research just no progress as yet

Sorry to be late on parade, I have work commitments that not only take up time but also wear me out somewhat nowadays.

The way that I read it is that it is an option for research later.

A vaccination is to stop a disease before it takes hold, but COPD is not a virus it is damage caused by foreign substances entering the lungs.

The fact that not all people who inhale foreign substances develop COPD, which is indicative that there is an epigenetic link for this, any "vaccine" would not be a vaccine in the traditional sense. It would have to involve genetic engineering. It would also not be a cure, reversing any existing damage :(

It would however protect future generations. There would be huge hurdles to get over editing the human genome and getting it approved. There is currently a case in China where twins had there genes edited, to prevent HIV, but unfortunately there were unseen consequences and their life spans have been unintentionally shortened. We are a long way off yet for this to be a viable option yet.

Still hoping in the near future not light years G-CSF or cancer drug that's my hope. Thanks for explaining. The researcher for the cancer drug said they have had a lot of patients and public interest....

You can't vaccinate against abusing your body by smoking or having your lungs abused by air pollution. or even second hand smoke. Asthma also is often caused by an allergy or even spasm and you can't vaccinate for that.... In short COPD is mainly caused by damage and is irreversible - A vaccine say at 21 years of age against certain virus and bacteria would be overridden by smoke or pollutants,,

2greys profile image
2greys in reply toErn007

Precisely, the only real cure will be for humans to "clean up their act" and clean up the existing pollution they have caused, but I'm afraid it will be a case of business as usual and the pollution will continue as long as there is money to be made from it.

in reply toErn007

So do you not believe that any treatment found will halt progression is that what your saying

Hoobs profile image
Hoobs

A cure will remain light years away until they start looking at Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema as separate diseases and start treating them as such.

The '' COPD'' umbrella is doing nobody any favours.

in reply toHoobs

There is resesrch looking at emphysema as a separate thing I actually do not see the point are we just giving up

Please don't loose your hope science is here to help ,they are not waistin there time ,they will find the solution for copd I know ...so what we need is a little faith and dear,we need to scream out loud till someone really listens..good night..👊✨

in reply toLivefor

Thank you but I guess I have been stupid. Months chasing research. Hoping that there would be an answer soon has kept me focused and uplifted. I guess because I am less than a year into my diagnosis, I wasnt really thinking that others have done what i was doing. I feel quite deflated today and would like to apologise for wasting peoples time. I really have got nothing to contribute to the forum, again I apologise

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

You are not wasting anyone’s time nor are you being unrealistic and you do contribute to the forum. I hope you stay around and continue to post.

I am not on about vaccines I am on about other treatment what is the point

If nothing will help why are researchers waste their time is that why a treatment cant be found. I am clearly very gullible as I actual believe a treatment to halt progression was near..

So again what are researchers trying to do when they talk about for example cancer drug has potential to halt progression ...I dont for one second believe damage lungs can heal but I actually am gullible believing this then. And thus see no point in chasing research anymore.

I have read that already I know what my condition is . Just dont see why researchers are wasting their time trying to come up with something that might stop further deterioration of the lung in emphysema. I wont chase research anymore..going to bed now.

jackdup profile image
jackdup in reply to

I think to believe there will never be a cure or treatment to halt progression or reverse damage is being very negative. I think there is a possibility of a treatment to halt progression as well as something that would cause the immune system to heal the damage. The body is amazing and heals all kinds of damage that was done and think at some point there will be a way to have the body heal damage done to the lungs. It may be through stem cells or or some other way the immune system is triggered to repair damage done to the lungs. Whether that will be in my lifetime or not who knows, could be next month or 50 years.

And you can have both Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema and not have COPD if spirometry doesn't fall below the cut off point, So many variations that no doubt all need different treatments.

Ern007 profile image
Ern007

if your remember Emphysema, bronchitis, used to be called COAD - It did not count Asthma or Bronchiectasis . It did when changed to COPD. All the different inhalers I have been given, all supposed to be better than the last.. Well you are right, it's wheeze for cash for the pharmaceuticals ,
