Hello all. I am a 47 year old Male and developed multiple pulmonary emboli as a result of surgery to my broken collar bone in early May 2019. After a week in hospital I was put onto Rivaroxaban and am on them now, 20mg a day. Each morning (and sometimes at night and sometimes during the day) I can taste blood so when I go to the bathroom I bring up blood in my sputum. Sometimes it's a bit sometimes a lot. I have been back to A and E and been told I am fine after ECG and other checks. The hospital will not give me another lung scan for some reason and I am worried that there might be more clots forming. I saw the consultant in charge of my case and he said it was perfectly normal for me to be bringing up blood (said it was the clots dissolving) and I should not worry. However I have read on the internet that this is not the case ... I dont think the Dr seemed that bothered about my case really, he just asked me why they hadn't scanned my arm, as he noted that nobody had asked where the clots came from. I said I didnt know and that really it was down to them to tell me, I'm not the medical expert after all? So I have to go back and get my arm scanned to check for vascular damage or blockages which is fine but seems a bit late to me 3 months down the line. I am trying to live a normal life, stopped drinking alcohol for 2 months but started again in moderation, dont know if that affects it or not. I am worried that I am bleeding internally and nobody will know until something awful happens. My local hospital in Brighton isn't the greatest so who knows whether I am actually receiving the best care or not? Any advice welcome. Thanks.

Hi, I would call the BLF help line on 03000 030555, uk office hours. They can give you expert guidance on what to expect from your medics. It's maddening and unfortunate that we have to be proactive in getting the best treatment.

Hopefully others will be along who've experience of PE soon in the mean time (and this is what I myself would do) stop the alcohol and smoking if you do, just to get your body the heathliest it can be for recovery.

Might be worth checking out section 5 of this Nhs check list on Rivaroxoban potential side effects and maybe give you a little reassurance,?
