Diabetes or pre-diabetes question

Morning everyone,

Having taken a lot of steroids in my life Im wondering if I might be moving towards pre-diabetes as a side effect. I know lots with copd have diabetes so hoping you can answer this question which I will also post on the Diabetes forum.

Im getting a lot of seemingly unexplained nausea without diarrhoea or vomiting and wondering if it could be a pre-diabetic symptom. I dont think it's coming from reflux.

I had some spot finger prick tests in hospital last summer, three of which were fine and one was well up from what it should be. I had thought I'd be ok as I dont eat much carbs or sugar and am slim, do exercise etc. But who knows? It's got me a bit scared as I seem to be collecting new long term conditions each year!

If anyone's got any insights on this Id be very grateful. Wishing everyone the best day possible and thanks in anticipation.

Sorry to reply late, my internet has been down all morning. My Consultant who is Normally helpful, only wanted to discuss Respiratory any thing else I go to my GP, as The GP/Nurse is doing the Urine Tests, so another appointment to be made. Yesterday, it was Decided I have A CT Scan as The X Ray showed my Valves have started to decrease the Volume I had lower Right Lung, if this is the result of CT Scan, Then I will have The Valves removed to be "Rinsed" and re inserted, That's fine as long as they do their Job. I am quite a Bit Breathless Today, and Feel Poorly. So I will bid you Farewell for now Hun. Love n Hugs xxxxx

A nurse told me I was borderline diabetic about three years ago. It was a relief as had seen London GP with my symptoms a few years a before and she just laughed, felt my pulse and said I was fine.

The symptoms I get are: legs turn to jelly, waves of weakness and perspiring a lot. This is when my blood sugar plummets (I think), when I've left it too long between feeds. Once floored at Marseille airport in a faint until someone found me some chocolate. Now I usually have e few oatcakes in my bag for emergencies. I've never felt actual nausea though.

I'll forward you an American organisation who are very helpful with diet & supplement information.

All these extras are such a pain aren't they 😳

Thanks so much for replying P - sorry you have to cope with this. Marseilles airport sounds a nightmare. The symptoms you describe are similar to what I had yesterday apart from not sweating - very sudden when I hadnt eaten for a while and I expected to feel better when I had eaten. But that didnt happen though I certainly do feel a little better when Ive eaten and not left it too long. I dont think sweet things make much difference though. Im trying to juggle possibility of what they call bronze diabetes, another name for haemochromatosis which I have and can store iron in the pancreas, with possibility of steroid induced diabetes, or hypoglycaemia. And maybe it's not either of those but it's a bit puzzling. Maybe it's just a virus . . .

Id be very appreciative to see the U.S. organisation you mention. xx :)

hi I'm the same . Had to go on a pre diabetes course as my blood sugar levels were getting in the diabetes zone. I know its my steroid use that's doing it. Anyway a high fibre diet and walking seems to be lowering my blood sugar levels ; I also lost weight unexpectantly. I now eat high fibre wholemeal bread, salmon, nuts, chia seeds and baked sweet potato including the skins. My levels dropped quite a bit but then went up a notch whereas those not on steroids kept dropping . Ask for a Hb1ac blood test . x Take care. Anita

So you're not taking any meds Anita? I certainly dont want to. I already eat pretty much what you describe. Low carbs seem to be the thing and although the ones I eat are good, Im wondering about cutting out or reducing them and upping the fat (olive oil, coconut oil etc). When you say you had to go on a course, what did that entail?

Im also having to make sure I dont leave too long between meals. Strangely when doing my walking indoors (15 minutes, long hall through house) it was the best it's been for ages. I will go for the test you mention, thanks so much x jean

I was also told: don’t add extra fats and keep to low fat. Drink plenty of water. The test is (A1c) Hba1c I always kept the letters the wrong way round🤣 going for my test tomorrow so have the correct terminology in front of me now. I don’t take meds for diabetes. On enough already. X

Seems there's some difference of opinion re low carbs. Ive read a lot about the so-called LCHF diet (low carbs high fat) and it's included in the Diabetes Uk website.

I think many medics are still going with the Eatwell Plate which has predominance of carbs but which, as far as I have read, has been largely discredited now. Important though that they are 'good' fats.

diabetes.co.uk/diet/low-car...

Ive seen articles from places such as Harvard Health, Stanford etc recommending consumption of fat/oils for health. But we are all different and if your diet works for you then that's excellent. x :)

Also I eat about every four hours now and if not a meal I have a low calorie high fibre snack such as popcorn or peasnacks or an apple.

Yes we used the food plate analogy and the high fibre carbs were recommended such as broccoli. I tend to avoid chips ands go for the sweet potato option. I have to be careful with some foods as I have ulcerative colitis aswell as asthma/mild bronchiectasis. Wishing you well x

Hi 02trees I don’t think nausea anything to do with pre diabetes my only symptom was passing urine a lot also having to get up in the night Can I just tell you after a change of diet and more exercise I got rid of that label no more pre diabetic only 2 more labels to go. Take care xxxx

O2Trees profile image
O2Trees

Wonderful, Id love to lose a few labels Christina! GP doesnt think it's diabetes either though I have seen nausea on diabetes websites. It's gotta be something as I never have nausea. We'll see - maybe it's just a stomach virus. Thanks for your reply and keep on losing the labels :) xx
