NIVI Mask

NIVI Mask, good morning everyone since August lasts year I have worn overnight a NIVI Mask to combat my C02 build up and help reduce it. I generally put my mask on around 9pm and I can tolerate it till around 3.30am within that time period my Oxygen is reduced from 4 Ltrs to 1 Ltr. Can I ask does anyone wear their mask throughout the day instead of overnight? Or do the majority of us wear them just at bedtime?

All your comments will be gratefully welcomed.

Thanks

Generally speaking the build up of co2 will be caused by shallow breathing whilst sleeping. When you are awake breathing tends to be a lot deeper (or should be) which expels the co2 much better. No personal experience, just logical.

Overnight for me (or if I need a disco nap in the afternoon 😊)

My equipment supplies 2lt/min constant overnight and with my VPAP machine my O2 and CO2 is now mostly under control

I’ve been on NIV for about 3years now and it has made my life so much better. Was in and out of hospital every few weeks with high carbon dioxide levels. I was told to use my machine for at least 18 hours a day. I have a full mask for when I sleep and one that just goes over my nose for when I’m awake. I have even got a nippy now which is a portable machine so I can get out a bit in the wheelchair. I would use the mask whenever you had a sleep even if it’s during the day. I think your tolerance to the mask tends to take time but you get there in the end. Sorry for rabbiting on. Good luck.

Hi Jo,

I've had it explained there's no value using the machine unless going to sleep as it kicks in when I dont breathe often enough?

Cheers Scouse

Hi Joseph, I'm another long term user of NIV for CO2 retention, so speak from 10 years experience of several different face masks. When I first started using the NIV my physio suggested wearing it during the day for a short time just to get used to the feel of it and breathing with it. But she emphasised that it really should be used whilst sleeping because, as 2greys says, breathing is so much shallower when you sleep.

So now I tend to put the mask on as soon as I get into bed, though I read for a while to relax before sleeping. I have no problems wearing it for anything up to 10 hours if I have an early night and sleep that long. My mask is now this one: eu-pap.co.uk/sleepweaver-an... It's not pretty but it's the most comfortable I've tried. Southampton Respiratory Unit have been brilliant in letting me sample several over the years, and I'm really grateful to them.

Someone mentioned dry mouth, which seems to go with any mask and for that I use a hydrator that was suggested when I asked the forum for advice years ago. hydrateforhealth.co.uk The cloth mask is good for this because it's easy to briefly lift it to take a drink, without having to sit up and take the mask right off. I can practically do it in my sleep!

Sorry this is a long one, but I hope it's helpful.

All the best, Jan :)

Thank you.

Can I ask you what happens when the co2 builds up through the night is it because you are on oxygen

Hi there, I like other people seem to retain C02 within my body. The oxygen helps me through out the day on 4lpm but overnight I change it down to 1lom when wearing my NIVI Mask.
