Further to my earlier post on my unexpected change from Carbocistene to NACSYS I have now been on them for a couple of weeks now and find them very good you take one tablet in the morning in half a glass of water and they really do break up the sticky mucus and I find my cough has improved a lot

Agree - I take 600mg effervescent acetylcisteine as my mucolitic of choice for bronchiectasis. I don't actually cough that much, but I still find mucolytics beneficial in watering down the sputum.

Different brand for me - "NAC Long", made by a German pharma company and sold in Thailand (where I live) and no doubt some other countries.

I couldn't tell the difference between the pharma effect of 1x 600mg acetylcisteine and 3 x 2 x 375mg* of carbocysteine when I self trialed both for 6 months (switching after every month end) but I like the convenience of one dose at breakfast and, as you say, the soluble acetylcysteine is a pleasant seltzer-like drink. I'm even prepared to suffer the cost - 40% more than carbocysteine once you are on to the reduced dose.

* Only just recently discovered that you are supposed to lower the dose og carbocysteine to 3 x 1 x 375mg after an introductory period and see if that is equally effective

It’s great that it’s working for you 👍 Please can you tell me if it’s on prescription only?

Excellent. I had looked at Boots online but didn’t see it there so I thought maybe it’s prescription only. Thanks.

I have been prescribed nacsys instead of Carbocysteine. Ihave bronchiectasis but also bronchial asthma. Says on leaflet not to take nacsys if you have bronchial asthma. Dr says there’s not much difference in the drug. Why say not to take it then on the leaflet? Am reluctant to start but Carbocysteine nearly finished.

Can you ask your pharmacist ? It seems a very specific thing to put in the leaflet if it’s irrelevant. I too would be very cautious about taking it.
