not quite sure what you are expecting. I use it as a replacement for my prescribed carbocisteine for holidays . Reason is one x600mg daily so saves taking dozens of capsules. do find it as good as carbocisteine for keeping the phlegm thin enough to cough up easily

Been on carbo for years I didnt think it helped so the asthma nurse changed it to nacsys 2 weeks ago but I havent seen any improvement. Thanks Colin.

What does the leaflet that comes with the NAC say about it?

Hi I have been on it 2yrs and it took 2days to notice the difference as I have 1 x effervescent tablet in water then wait 10 mins and use my acapella device to do clearance and I am great most of the day.on carbocysteine I had a big dip in the middle of the day with tiredness and took 3 tablets a day. medication is different suitability for others .

Been on it over 2 weeks but I find the sputum very sticky. I asked the asthma nurse she said give it at least a month. I have been asking for a nebuliser but they are not very keen on giving me one. They say it causes infection. Have you got one? Colin.

Hi no I haven't due to having bronchiectasis I am susceptible to infection. I do drink 2 litres of water a day to keep mucus looser

Do you find the water helps. Nurse keeps telling me I need more water but I find it difficult cant eat at the best of times if I drink lot of water I'm bloated. Colin.

Definitely helps I keep a bottle and sip it throughout the day so that you don't get bloated drinking a lot in one go

I tried NACSYS & carbocisteine and they didn't work for me, In fact the Carbocisteine actually dried my sputum up! The respiratory consultant & nurse told me they don't always work for everyone. I was advised to try each one for a month. Hope this helps.

So what are you on now?.Colin.

It's hard going. I'm not on anything to thin the mucus at all. I drink plenty of water, exercise and do regular airway cleasance best I can. I've had lots of chest infections/bugs over the last 2 years and after each 2 week course of antibiotics seem to get sputum up, I have been prescribed daily doxycycline over the last 3 months and now I've just stopped that and now started Azithromycin 3 times a week as a prophylactic to trial.

Good luck, hope it all works out . You must have had a very stubborn bug, do you know what it was panthor?

Yeah, the stubborn bugs that keep reoccuring are Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae and some types of coliforms from what I'm told. It seems like a repetitive cycle of antibiotics, then within a couple of weeks the sputum changes and here we go again! Hopefully, should start settling down now I've started the regular Azithromycin. Fingers crossed 🤞

I don't know about Staph but I believe lungs can be colonised with the haemophilia Influenzae and can be controlled rather than eradicated. I may be wrong, I remember reading it on here.

If you write those two bugs separately in the search bar above (&/or on NHS website ) you'll find out more about them, which abs work and how to keep them at bay - particularly on NHS website.

Hi Panthor,

Just been reading your posts re. Mucous clearance and your condition, etc. How did you get on with the azithromycin and nacsys after?

Regards.

Hi, I’ve been on Nacsys for two months now. My consultant told me that it takes a couple of months for it to be really effective and that, after a couple of months, it will also be reducing inflammation in the airways. I still have to drink a lot of water to be able to bring anything up. I use a flutter & Aerobika device. I have a combination of bronchiectasis, asthma, mild emphysema & ABPA. Carbocisteine didn’t do anything for me, that’s why they changed it.
