Out of control cough what's the best treatment thanks
Have you tried your ventolin in haler w
Yes I have it helps a little. But it's an out of control coughing fit that lasts for about 20 minutes sometimes I think I'm going to pass out sipping cold water helps but I just wondered if anyone else suffers this with their copd thanks for your reply
Best thing i ever had that a doctor give me was Codeine Linctus 15mg/5ml Syrup it's the only thing that stopped my cough like yours. and it worked instantly
Thanks Andy that sounds good I'll mention it to my doctor x
Codeine linctus is great but the minute bronchiectasis was diagnosed I was told never to use it again. And before that, because I have asthma, it was frowned upon. But it does stop the cough but they say that coughing is good!
Hi Dilly2, I am here in Australia and I take a cough mixture called Bisolven, not sure if you can get it where you are but it helps. Also I get a generic brand from the pharmacy called Chesty Mucus Relief Forte and that helps move the gunk but also helps with soothing the throat and avoid those long coughing bouts. Perhaps speak to your Pharmacist and or GP. All the best with it and good luck.
I have found that Co-Codamol tablets do the trick for me. I was given some in A&E and they worked almost straight away.
Worth a try.
Can you buy those over the counter sounds good to me.
Thanks Grayjay
Hi Dilly, Yes you can. I took some last night as my cough was like yours I think. I usually take just one but had 2 to get fid of it. The only problem is that they can make you constipated but it's not the end of the world.
They are 8mg/500mg from the Chemist. My GP gave me stronger ones 30mg/500. I normally take the milder ones, they do work.
Good luck.
2 grams of Vit C 3 times a day helped a friend get rid of a cough he had for 18 years caused by asbestos
Ask if you could have coedine cough syrup, the heart nurse prescribed it for me as I hadn't had a proper night's sleep for weeks. I've now been given liquid morphine by pulmonary Dr to take the edge off the coughing. I only take a small dose at bedtime.
I have 2 puffs of Ventolin, very hard if in public and everyone staring at you.
I have mild bronchiectasis which was undiagnosed for years and I get through my major coughing fits by eating my way through several Hall's Soothers cough sweets as well as the usual inhalers. It's the only way that I can risk going to the theatre or cinema as i would be too disruptive otherwise! Take care.
I find that original fishermans friend lozenges will take away a constant tickle in the throat making you cough. They taste dreadful but they do the trick for me.Do hope you get it sorted coughing is so exhausting xx
Hi Comino2 those Bronco pastilles are good expensive though yes the cough does wear us down best wishes.
I was thinking of the Fishermans friend lozenges which I think are about 65p a packet.Yes the Broncho stop ones are expensive and in my opinion do not work as well as the 'fishy friends' I dont even have to suck a whole one [thank goodness] and the tickle subsides.Maybe because they taste so awfull it distracts your brain from noticing the tickle.but as others have said..nasty coloured phlegm, fever, shortness of breath = visit to doctors to be sure. take care xx
Depends what colour the phlegm is? Fever
How long have u had it?
Hi Lola 69
I haven't got a infection but it is mucus on the lungs I do my breathing exercises but still get this o
ut of control coughing fit.
Maybe augment your water intake? Are u allowed ?
Yes I am but I don't want to be up all night peeing thanks for your help Lola 69
My doc prescribed Flonase spray to insert in the morning. ... it takes a while. Just make sure it’s a sinusitis and not a vascular problem. How long u had this?
Are you sure it’s not acid from your tum that’s not starting your throat off? Is it worse when you lay back?
Carbocisteine is a great help, I take 3 a day to Liquidise the Phlegm in my Lungs and make it easier to bring up along with doing the "Huff", I have another little cough right now so I will Huff away. Good Luck xxx
Thanks for your reply Hacienda
I do take carbocisteine 4 times aday so no problem there it's just my tickle cough drives me mad keep sipping cold water then I keep peeing it just gets so tiring feel a bit of a fraud going on here to moan as we are all in the same boat
Best wishes
I know how you feel, the peeing is a nuisance, not every cough though, just the deep ones. Sometimes I find sipping a cold drink brings on the coughing also. it's swings & roundabouts some days. Don't ever think your moaning Hun, we all Moan together and support each other, no matter the problem. Deep Breathing can ease the cough also. Love n Hugs. XXXX
Dilly2 - carbocysteine makes you cough because it loosens up the phlegm. My OH has his last (third) dose about 5pm so it doesn’t keep him awake. However, before he goes to bed he spends time on clearance. Same again in the morning.
It sounds as if you are coughing for a good reason ie inflammation - mucous. You should perhaps see the physiotherapist for advice about clearance techniques that will get rid of the sputum. Devices such as the Flutter valve can be very helpful. Good clearance can cut the time spent coughing and huffing, Make use of your cough to improve your lung hygiene.
