its something simply but does help

That happens to my husband - we have found that bronchostop pastilles are pretty good. They seem to relieve the cough - not the medicine so much. Hope it goes soon, it is so tiring coughing all night. Lots of love xxx

Hi Violet

You have my sympathy...l always get a cough at night after l have been Ill.

It's the last thing you need is lack of sleep.

I find sucking strepsills helps as it deadens the back of your throat, and Vicks anaesthetic/antiseptic throat spray.

I also have extra pillpows and sleep slightly upright, that seems to help.

I do hope you feel better soon.

Velvet xx

I was useing chloraseptic spray. First day it was great but don't seem to work with me now. I did use more pillows aswell but I found it difficult to get comfy but I know it's better to try sleep that way. It's been a long night. Hope to get something else today and hopefully have a better night tonight. Thanku for responce . It's so nice haveing people that relates to this awfull copd and wot comes with it x

I agree, honey and lemon can help a lot. I think when you are low things do seem to come back and then go again. Pete is still not completely better after his latest chest infection but he's getting there. xxx

Hello violet,

It's horrid, it's debilitating and makes you feel downright miserable waiting for the next episode.and you have my sympathy. I always keep lemons in and make my own lemon and honey with a touch of glycerin - helps it slide down. Try and surround yourself with a mountain of pillows in bed and see if you can find a comfy spot, otherwise you tend to be up all night. I hope you will soon feel much better and able to enjoy your Grandaughter's Birthday.

G'day Violet,

I sympathise with you my wife has IPF and "wet" coughing is a side effect.

We have found the following helps

For severe coughing Panadene Forte

" Elderberrys with honey added

" " Fisherman's friend Pretty strong taste but they work within minutes

I am confident that at least one of the suggestions posted by all our members will assist

Good luck

Thanku for reply il trying everything that been suggested . Sleeping with a mountain of pillows last night but not slept so good again. I'm sorry your wife is suffering give her a hug from me x

in reply toviolet1

Thanks Violet

I forgot to mention re the 'Fisherman's Friend"

It is best to place it under your tongue

I myself have used this to break up flem, and it works a treat.

Susan uses the Panadene forte due to the coughing fits, probably different from yours, and they really work for around 4 hours.

Hope you find something that will help you.

Best wishes

Will

I really sympathise - got a chest infection just before Christmas, and am still coughing. Keep water beside your bed, and soothing pastilles (bronchostop are good). Very important to stay hydrated during the day - make sure you are drinking enough water! A saltwater gargle before bed can be soothing too, and clear some of the gunk from your throat. Good luck - hope you feel better soon, Violet! x

Do you cough up mucus/phlegm?

violet1 profile image
violet1 in reply tosarcoid123

Yes I do but it's hard work at times

sarcoid123 profile image

Hello again. I have long term sarcoidosis of the lungs and I have coughing symptoms similar to you.

I asked earlier if you cough up mucus/phlegm. You replied that you do have mucus on your lungs. May I suggest from my own experience:

1. In case it is an infection you should ask your doctor to test it so that they know which antibiotic will 'kill' the type of infection. If it is yellow, I understand that means it is an infection; if it is white it is just mucus/phlegm.

2. Also, if you do have mucus on your lungs, you should ask your doctor about Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT), which I do every day to loosen the mucus so that it can be coughed up. It is very simple and there are webpages teaching it on Youtube. I was taught by a NHS physiotherapist.

3. If there is still some mucus 'stuck' you could also ask your doctor about a Flutter device or an Acapella device which helps loosen stubborn mucus.

4. Since I have been doing Active Cycle of Breathing Technique each morning and evening (not always necessary to do twice a day) my life is transformed as I do not usually feel I need to cough during the day. I also used to sleep sitting up, but once I clear the mucus/phlegm I can lie down to sleep.

5. I don't go anywhere without Fisherman's Friends 'cough sweets' (original) as if I have a tickle in my throat they take away the immediate urge to cough. They have menthol and eucalyptus in them.

6. After I have had an infection in the past my mucus cough gets a bit worse and I have found, after I do the ACBT, I take just one teaspoonful of mucus clearing cough medicine containing guaifenesin and that helps to stop any wheezing. I do not, however, take cough medicine all the time, only after I have had an infection.

7. And pharmacists sell things to help you sleep such at Nytol (either herbal or non herbal). Apparently this does not work for everyone, but a pharmacist may be able to suggest an alternative if necessary.

I hope this helps. As most people replied earlier in the day, I will put all my suggestions on to a new post in case it helps other people.

To help me really I have listed the suggestions from other friends on this page. Thank you everyone very much.
