Advice please: how do people manage their reflux medication while taking antibiotics?

I take maintenance dose of lansoprozole (15mg), usually around 10.30 at night.

Now Im also on Augmentin as of today for bronchitis so have to take one of those around the same time.

Two questions: should I have a gap between taking each of them? Does anyone know if it's thought that taking them together or near each other will hinder absorption of the AB (like ppis do for calcium, magnesium etc because of reduced acid)? Secondly, the sites Ive looked at online say that taking both is a major risk for c-difficile, though maybe that's if you are in hospital.

Nothing's ever simple - any thoughts please. Hope everyone's having as good an evening as possible.

Hi O2Trees. Why not give the BLF nurses a ring in the morning? 03000 030 555.

" Hello Jean.. I'm taking lansoprozol twice a day. 20mg in morning..and 20mg in the evening. I take my antibiotics around an hour before I take the reflux medication.. I have no side affects from either of them. But I don't think it matters if they clash. Mind thats a Vets advice. Lol..hoping I've been a help to you Jean..x Megan..."

Glad you're doing well Megan. It's not actually my reflux which is the problem, that's well controlled. I was just concerned that the reduced stomach acid caused by the reflux medication might stop proper AB absorption. Love to all of you xx

I think that is excellent advice and whenever in doubt wait the 2 hours to be on the safe side.

Hi O2 why not ask your pharmacist as they should know. Stay safe xx

O2Trees - I take Omeprazole which is not unlike your medication and there is no reaction between them and Augmentin...

Two options leave an hour gap or ring your dispensing Pharmasist..

Hope you are feeling better soon, could you maybe adjust the time of one drug to ensure good results. I just had to do that with the antibiotics to fit in with meal times. My doctor suggests the two hour gap also. Take care x

It seems we get different instructions Nitap. If yours works for you, and your doctor is happy, then I'd say - stick with it. Glad you're enjoying PR. Thanks for your reply. :)

Thanks for the reply methinks sometimes you need a Univercity degree to understand it all 😄😳 I am very lucky that I live mid Essex and the treatments are great and I must add “I have the best GP, so great she treats all her patients as friends” !! All staff in surgery have to call them by their first names, as they do to the patients. Always happy and helpful as is ‘Joanna, yep the GP’ plus she does home visits - very very different to West Essex where we lived moved here late 2015 so glad I did, I just wish everyone one could have the same ??!!! 🌹🤙 xx

I have been on Lanzoprazole 15mgs for a long time now since having a gastric ulcer, I have always been advised to take it in the morning at least an hour before eating x

Mine's not for my stomach judall, but for the oesophagus and I have Barretts Oesophagus. Ive always been told to take it an hour before bed time, probably because when you are lying more prone, the acid can leak out from the stomach. :)
